The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s break down what’s coming at Fourth Beach over the next couple of weeks.
We’ve got a decent run of surf on the horizon, but it’s not all clean. Water temp is about 62°F, pretty normal for this time of year. Nothing worth paddling out for on Thursday the 19th—the wind’s onshore and the surf is poor.
Friday the 21st is a real standout. 8ft SW groundswell with a long 15-second period, and the wind is glassy out of the ENE. That’s a dream scenario for experienced surfers. The wave energy is strong (3384), so there’s plenty of juice, but that long period might make the waves a bit straight at a beach break. Expect some company in the water.
Saturday the 22nd is another good one. 7ft SSW swell with a 14-second period, clean offshore winds from the north, and strong energy (2884). It’s going to be clean and fun, but again, watch for the longer period making things a little fat.
Sunday the 23rd and Monday the 24th are messy with cross-onshore wind and chop. Skip ’em. Tuesday the 25th is small—5ft and 4ft—with the energy dropping to moderate (742 and 625), but the winds are clean and cross-offshore. Good for a small-wave cruise.
Then we get a big one on Wednesday the 26th. 10ft SW swell with a very long 17-second period. That’s huge energy (7817). The wind is cross-onshore from the SSE, so it’ll be lumpy. Experts only at this size.
The end of August and start of September clean up nicely. Sunday the 30th and Monday the 31st both offer 5ft to 6ft SSW swells with 17 to 18-second periods, light offshore or cross-off winds, and clean conditions. Strong energy (1625 and 1646). Excellent options for experienced surfers.
Tuesday the 1st of September finishes strong—5ft SW swell, 15-second period, offshore winds in the morning, light cross-off in the afternoon. Moderate energy (1204 and 1103). A good, clean start to the month.
Best bets: Friday the 21st and Saturday the 22nd are your top picks. Glassy conditions, strong swell, and clean faces. Get out there.
Rusty.
