The Lowdown
IMPERIAL
Alright crew, let's chew the fat on Fourth Beach. Over the next couple of weeks, we've got a proper storyline – some absolute crackers for the experienced hands, and some flat, rowdy spells that are best watched from the dune.
We've got a patient wait for the first good one. The early action is for the hardened crew. On Saturday, August the 22nd, we're looking at a solid 7 ft SSW groundswell with a 14-second interval under clear skies. The wind is a moderate offshore from the NNE at 12 mph, so it’ll be clean. The combined energy is pumping at 2997, meaning there’s proper grunt in the water. It’s an advanced wave, and it’s a consistent break so it’ll keep offering. Just so you know, it can get a crowd now and again. The water temp feels pretty average for this time of year. That Saturday morning is your standout for the first week – clean, solid, and on.
The conditions get messy from Saturday afternoon through Monday the 25th with onshore winds and poor surf. Leave it be. But then, Tuesday the 25th afternoon is a magic moment. The wind goes glassy from the SE at just 3 mph, the swell drops to a manageable 5 ft from the SW with a 12-second period. The energy is a moderate 958, and the word is to expect very good surf conditions. This is the session you don’t miss. The break will be clean.
Later that week, Wednesday the 26th afternoon looks absolutely wild, with an 12 ft SW swell and a 19-second period. That’s a monster groundswell with a combined energy of 10162 – that's a serious amount of power. The forecast actually says it’s too big for this break, so only the proper experts with a death wish and the right equipment should even consider it. The rest of that week is a write-off with strong cross-onshore winds.
As we roll into the second week, it gets a bit tougher to read, but a couple of windows open up. The morning of Saturday the 29th looks okay with a 3 ft SSW swell and 18-second period, clean with a light offshore breeze, but it’s small.
Sunday the 30th morning, though, is the one to circle on the calendar. A big 10 ft SSW swell (17-second period) with a moderate offshore wind from the N at 12 mph and a combined energy of 4714. The forecast says it’s excellent for experienced surfers. It’s a long way out, so don’t bet the house on it, but it has the makings of a classic. After that, the first few days of September offer some small, clean options for a longboard, but nothing to get too excited about. The afternoons get ruined by onshore wind.
So, for the set-your-watch sessions: Saturday the 22nd morning and Tuesday the 25th afternoon are your best bets. Keep your fingers crossed for Sunday the 30th morning – could be a ripper.
Rusty, out.
