Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
Alright, Rusty here, let's talk about what's on offer at Fourth Beach for the next couple of weeks.
We've got a solid pulse of long-period groundswell kicking off the period. The water temp is sitting at 62°F, which is about 1°F cooler than average, so pretty much what you'd expect for this time of year. The combined wave energy is pumping at 3744 (moderate to strong) to start with.
Tuesday, 7th July, morning is your first real look. Fourth Beach is a fairly exposed spot for a SSW swell, and that's exactly what's coming. We're looking at a 7ft SSW groundswell with a very long 17-second period. This long-period stuff can be a bit straight at beach breaks, but with a clean 15 km/h NE cross-offshore breeze, it'll be well-shaped. This is an advanced break, and for good reason. The afternoon turns a bit cross, but the morning window is clean. This is the true standout of the first week. The combined energy is very strong at 3744.
Wednesday, 8th July keeps the run going. Morning is even better, with a 6ft SSW swell (15-second period) and a light 10 km/h offshore wind from the N. Afternoon gets glassy with a 6ft SSW swell and barely a breath of wind (5 km/h NE). Both windows are clean and excellent for experienced surfers. Crowds are possible here sometimes, so getting in early is a good plan.
Thursday, 9th July is still worth a paddle. The morning sea breeze is a bit stronger at 15 km/h NW, but it's cross-off. The swell drops a little to 6ft SW (14 seconds). The afternoon is where it's at—totally glassy with an ESE breeze at 5 km/h, and a 5ft SW swell. Excellent conditions, with combined energy (1653) still solid.
Friday, 10th July to Saturday, 11th July are a write-off. Onshore wind from the WSW at 20 km/h, rubbish chop, and poor surf conditions. For those couple of days, don't bother. It might be more interesting for the kite surfers than paddle surfers.
Now for the interesting part of the second week.
We see a big jump. Monday, 13th July, morning is glassy, with an 12ft SSW groundswell at 17 seconds. The combined energy is massive at 7368 (very strong). However, that's too big for this break. It's for experts only. The wind is calm, making it glassy, but the size is intimidating.
Tuesday, 14th July offers the next true standout. Morning has a 7ft SSW swell (14 seconds) with a clean 15 km/h offshore breeze from the NNE. The afternoon is just as good, 7ft swell, with a light cross-offshore ENE breeze at 10 km/h. Combined energy is around 2000 (moderate). Clean, excellent conditions for experienced surfers.
Wednesday, 15th July has a clean offshore wind all day, but it's blowing a fresh 30 km/h from the N in the morning, backing off to 20 km/h in the afternoon. The swell holds at 7ft SSW (15 seconds). It'll be clean but a bit raw in the morning.
Thursday, 16th July afternoon is a real possibility. The morning wind is a strong 30 km/h from the NNW, but the afternoon drops to 15 km/h offshore from the same direction. The swell jumps to an 8ft SW groundswell with a 17-second period and massive combined energy of 3908 (strong). That's a powerful, clean wave for experienced surfers.
After that, Friday, 17th July pushes into too-big territory again. A massive 15ft SW swell (16 seconds, energy 16249) with offshore wind. That is a full-on, expert-only day, and even then, it might be too big and unruly. The rest of the period into late July is ruined by strong onshore winds or just messy conditions.
So, to sum it up: If you want the best windows, hit Tuesday 7th July morning and Tuesday 14th July (both windows). Those are your clean, excellent, and surfable standouts. The first week is more reliable, the second week's standout is promising but less certain at this range.
Rusty out.
