The Lowdown
Alright, let’s get into it. This is Fourth Beach we’re talking about, and the next 16 days have a bit of a slow start before some real gems show up.
The first decent surf we see is on Tuesday, July 14th, with a solid 8ft SSW groundswell rolling in at a long 15 seconds. That’s a proper, powerful swell with a lot of energy behind it (3118), but it’s pushing into the advanced-only zone. The wind is a light cross-off, so the morning session is looking clean and lined up. This is strong stuff though, not for the faint-hearted. The water temperature is about average for this time of year, so you’ll be comfortable in a spring suit.
The next real standout comes on Wednesday, July 15th, in the afternoon. The swell drops a touch to 6ft, still from the SSW, and the period holds at 14 seconds. What makes this special is the clean, glassy offshore wind. It’s going to be a beautiful, clean afternoon with good shape. The energy is still solid (1888), but it’s much more manageable than the day before.
Thursday, July 16th, keeps the run going. The morning is a bit windier, but the afternoon is where it’s at. You’ve got 7ft of SSW groundswell, 15 seconds, and a moderate offshore wind. The waves will be clean and powerful, with a fairly consistent lineup. The energy is moderate to strong (1907).
After a messy Friday and Saturday, the next real highlight is Monday, July 20th. Both the morning and afternoon are winners. The swell is a steady 7ft from the SSW, with a 13-second period, and the wind is offshore. The morning breeze is a bit stronger, but the afternoon is a dream with a light offshore breeze and clean conditions. The energy is solid (1345 in the arvo), and it’s a great day for any experienced surfer.
Further out, on Saturday, July 25th, the morning looks promising. The swell drops to 6ft, but it’s a clean SSW groundswell at 13 seconds, and the wind is a gentle cross-off. This is a very good, clean morning session with moderate energy (931).
The big one, and I mean big, is on Tuesday, July 28th and Wednesday, July 29th. The swell is pumping – 8ft to 12ft from the SSW, with a very long period of 18 to 19 seconds. That’s a lot of water moving, and the energy is massive (6060 to 8392). But here’s the thing: the forecast says it’s too big for this break. Only the most experienced, well-equipped crew should even think about it, and even then, it’s a gamble. The Wednesday morning of the 29th does have a clean offshore wind, but at 12ft, it’s a beast.
So, if you’re looking for the best of the best, lock in the afternoon of Wednesday, July 15th, and the afternoon of Monday, July 20th. Clean, powerful, and manageable. The long-range stuff around the 28th and 29th is a promise of something massive, but it’s a promise that might be too much to handle.
