The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's get into it.

We’ve got a solid run of swell lining up for Fourth Beach. This is an advanced spot, so it’s not for the faint-hearted. The water temperature is sitting at 62°, which is about average for this time of year, so nothing too wild on that front.

The action kicks off on Tuesday, July 14th. The morning is where it’s at with a solid 8ft SSW groundswell. The period is a long 15 seconds, packing a lot of punch – the combined energy is a very strong 3118. The wind is a light cross-off from the NNW, which will keep things clean. This is excellent surf for experienced surfers, but that size and power will be too much for beginners. The afternoon sees the wind swing ESE and go cross-shore, making it a bit choppier, so the morning is the clear winner.

Wednesday the 15th sees the swell drop a touch to 6ft, but the wind goes offshore from the North, and it’s a fresh 19 mph in the morning. That’s going to groom it beautifully. The afternoon is even better with a gentle 9 mph offshore from the NNE. The energy is still strong at 2018, and the 14-second period means great shape. This is a standout session.

Thursday the 16th is another cracker. The morning has a strong 22 mph offshore wind from the North, cleaning up a 7ft, 16-second groundswell. That’s a very long period, which at a beach break can make the waves a bit too straight, but at Fourth Beach it should still offer some great lines. The afternoon settles to a gentle offshore, making it a top pick.

Friday the 17th sees the swell easing down to 5ft, but the wind is still offshore, so it’s clean and fun. The energy is moderate (636), so it’s a good day for a bit of a breather.

Saturday the 18th is a write-off with messy cross-shore winds and a drop in quality. Sunday the 19th brings a new pulse of 8ft SW swell, but the wind is cross-shore and cross-on, so it’s not going to be clean. Skip it.

Monday the 20th is a bit meh, with cross-off winds and dropping swell.

Now, here’s a real standout further out. On Wednesday, July 22nd, we see a big 10ft SSW swell rolling in with a 13-second period. The combined energy is a massive 3644. The wind is a gentle cross-off from the WNW, keeping it clean. This is big, powerful, and for experts only. Thursday the 23rd holds similar size at 10ft, also with clean cross-off winds. These are the big days to circle on the calendar, but remember, it’s a long-range call, so keep an eye on it.

Saturday the 26th sees a nice drop to 5ft with light offshore winds, a great morning for a smaller, more manageable session.

The final few days of the month see the swell building again, but watch out for Tuesday the 28th afternoon where the period drops to a short 8 seconds and the wind goes cross-on, turning it into a mushy mess. And on Wednesday the 29th, the swell is predicted to be a huge 12ft, which is just too big for this break, even for the experts.

Overall, the best of the best are the mornings of Wednesday the 15th and Thursday the 16th for quality, clean, offshore conditions. For the big stuff, target the 22nd and 23rd of July, but be ready for a serious challenge.

Rusty.
