The Lowdown
G’day, it’s Rusty here. Let’s have a chat about the surf ahead along this stretch. Over the next 16 days it starts a bit flat and messy, but there are some nice clean windows later for those who wait.
We’re only looking at Fourth Beach (advanced, fairly exposed to the SW). It opens on Saturday July 18th with a weak 3ft SW swell and short period, plus a stiff 35 km/h NNW wind making it rough. Afternoon wind turns west-southwest but stays crosswise, no good. Combined energy is weak-to-moderate (504).
Sunday the 19th looks cleaner but not quite there. Swell jumps to 7ft from the SW with a long 16-second period — proper groundswell. The west-northwest cross-off wind at 20 km/h keeps the surface clean, but wave quality is still marginal and the energy is strong (2164). Crowds can happen here sometimes. Too big for beginners, not quite cooking for experts either. Afternoon goes downhill.
Now Monday morning the 20th of July — that’s the first real standout. Clean 7ft SSW swell with a 13-second period, light 10 km/h north offshore wind, strong energy (1510). Good shape, manageable size for experienced surfers, and the water temp at 17° is about average for this time of year. This is your pick early on. Monday afternoon turns onshore and drops off.
The rest of the first week? Tuesday the 21st is a stormout with strong cross-on wind. Wednesday the 22nd sees the swell roar to 10–12ft from the SSW (4128–4308 energy) — experts only, and honestly looks more like a kite session given the size and cross-onshore breeze. Thursday the 23rd morning brings clean 8ft SSW groundswell (15 seconds) with light north-northeast offshore — excellent for pros, but still heavy.
Friday the 24th afternoon has a clean 6ft SSW swell with light north offshore — decent, not a standout. Saturday the 25th and Sunday the 26th fade with smaller swell and onshore winds. Sunday the 26th has a massive 18-second period SSW swell (5ft – 2831 energy) but cloudy with south wind onshore — messy.
Now here’s the big one. Thursday July 30th morning. This is the true highlight. A powerful 12ft SSW swell with a 15-second period, solid north offshore wind at 25 km/h, and the combined swell energy is absolutely enormous (13642). This is deep, clean groundswell — only for experts at this size. Afternoon stays excellent with 10ft and a north-northeast cross-off breeze (6290 energy).
Friday the 31st and Saturday August 1st keep the quality rolling — Friday morning 8ft SSW (16 seconds, light northeast cross-off), then Saturday the 1st of August has a stunning 6ft SSW swell with a 16-second period and glassy conditions in the afternoon. That’s a beautiful, clean session for stronger intermediates too.
The last day or two into Sunday August 2nd fade with smaller swell and onshore wind.
Wrap-up: Monday the 20th morning is your clean, medium-sized go for experienced surfers, but the real standout is Thursday July 30th morning — big, clean, powerful groundswell for experts only. Saturday August 1st afternoon is a beauty for a slightly smaller, glassy session.
Watch the rips out there.
