Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
Righto, surfers, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what the next couple of weeks are serving up for us at Fourth Beach.
Alright, so we've got a solid run of Southern Ocean groundswell on the cards. It's not going to be a flat spell, that's for sure. The water temp is sitting at about 62°F which is pretty much normal for this time of year, nothing weird going on there.
The first real standout kicks off this Friday, the 3rd of July. We're looking at a glassy morning with no wind at all, and a solid 10ft SSW groundswell rolling in. The period is a long 14 seconds, so these are proper groundswell lines with plenty of energy behind them (4144). This is serious, experienced surfer territory only. The afternoon cleans up a touch at 7ft, still glassy, still excellent for those who know what they're doing. Crowds are only sometimes an issue here, so you might have a bit of space if you're keen and skilled.
Moving into Saturday the 4th, we've got a morning cross-off breeze with a 7ft SSW swell, and things get a bit more manageable but still punchy. The afternoon sees the swell jump to 8ft with an 18-second period (4617), which is a very long-period groundswell. That kind of period can make a beach break a bit straight and hard to manage, but it'll still be powerful. Sunday the 5th looks bumpy with strong northerly winds in the morning, so not the best.
Now, the next real highlight is Tuesday the 7th of July. Both the morning and afternoon are absolute crackers. You've got a clean 10ft SSW swell with a 17 to 18-second period and light cross-off breezes. The energy is massive – readings of 6218 and 5914 – so this is a powerful, long-period groundswell. Again, this is big and only for experts, but the conditions are about as good as they get for a wave of this size.
Wednesday the 8th holds up nicely with a clean 7ft morning and a 6ft afternoon, both with good offshore or cross-off breezes. That's a great day for the strong intermediate or advanced surfer.
Things start to get a bit messy from Thursday the 9th through the weekend with onshore winds and chop, so it’s not a great call for paddle surfing.
However, we get another big pulse on Sunday the 12th of July. A huge 12ft SSW groundswell with heavy energy (6189) arrives, but it's accompanied by a strong onshore wind, making conditions poor and choppy. That's a shame, as the power is there.
We bounce back nicely on Monday the 13th and Tuesday the 14th of July. Monday is all clean with a 8ft to 8ft SSW swell and light cross-off winds – excellent stuff for experienced surfers. Tuesday the 14th looks even bigger at 12ft again, clean, but the file tells me it might just be too big for the break itself. So, watch that one.
The following week has a bit of everything. Wednesday the 15th has clean cross-off winds but a moderate breeze, and the swell drops back to a clean 7ft. By Thursday the 16th, the swell has dropped right off to under 3ft, so it’s small. Friday the 17th sees a new strong offshore and a 6ft to 7ft SW groundswell return, but the wind is howling at 25 mph in the morning, making paddling near impossible. The afternoon looks better.
Best on offer: Friday morning the 3rd of July for the glassy, powerful start, and then the whole day on Tuesday the 7th of July for the absolute peak of clean, long-period groundswell. Monday the 13th is also a fantastic, cleaner option if the 7th is too big for you.
