The Lowdown
Righto, let’s have a look at what’s on the cards. We’ve got a solid run of swell on the way for Fourth Beach, and the first real taste of it hits early on Friday. The water temp is sitting right on average for this time of year at 61°, so nothing out of the ordinary there.
Friday morning, August 21 – this is the standout. Glassy conditions, clean as a whistle, with a solid 8 ft SSW swell rolling in at a generous 15 seconds. The combined energy is pumping at 3384, which is strong and full of grunt. This is proper groundswell, and with that long period, it’ll be best handled by experienced surfers – it’s over 8 ft, so experts only. The offshore wind is nil, making it glassy perfection. Crowds can be an issue here sometimes, so get in early.
Friday afternoon the wind swings SE and it gets a bit choppy, not worth your time.
Saturday morning, August 22 is another good shout. A clean 7 ft SSW swell with a 12 mph north wind blowing offshore. The energy is still strong at 2997, and it’s clean. Still sizey for a learner, but good fun for intermediates and up.
Saturday afternoon picks up a touch to 8 ft, but the SE cross-onshore breeze puts a bit of texture on it.
Sunday looks messy – onshore winds and dropping energy, best to give it a miss.
Monday, August 24 sees a return of 8 ft SSW swell at 15 seconds, but it’s got a cross-onshore wind, making it choppy. Not the best for a clean wave.
Tuesday, August 25 drops down to 5 ft, but the wind is cross-offshore and clean in the morning. A smaller, cleaner option if you want a paddle.
Wednesday morning, August 26 is a real highlight. 7 ft SW swell, 15 seconds, with a 9 mph north offshore wind – clean and punchy. Energy is strong at 2565. This is another one for the experienced crew, with great shape on offer. Wednesday afternoon, however, gets messy with onshore wind and a big 10 ft spike, but it’s blown out.
Thursday, August 27 is a write-off – strong onshore winds and lumpy, dangerous conditions.
Friday, August 28 stays poor with onshore wind and dropping swell.
Saturday, August 29 is small and blown out.
Sunday morning, August 30 – a nice surprise. 7 ft SSW at 16 seconds, clean offshore cross-off wind, and the energy is strong at 2147. This is a gem for experienced surfers, with long-period groundswell and clean faces. Crowds possible.
Monday, August 31 holds 7 ft SSW at a very long 17 seconds. Morning has a fresh offshore wind, and afternoon is clean too. Energy is high at 2964. Great for the experts, and the long period will make it wall up nicely at the point.
Tuesday, September 1 has smaller 6 ft glassy conditions in the afternoon – a good option for a cruisier session.
Thursday, September 3 is blown out again.
Friday, September 4 sees a return of size: 8 ft SSW at 17 seconds, with clean cross-offshore winds. Energy is huge at 4304. This is another standout for experienced surfers only – powerful, long-period groundswell with clean conditions.
Saturday, September 5 drops off with onshore wind and lumpy conditions.
All in all, the best bet is Friday morning, August 21 – it’s as good as it gets: glassy, strong, and well-formed. Sunday morning, August 30 and Monday morning, August 31 are also top-tier for the experienced crew.
Stay safe out there.
