The Lowdown
Alright, let’s get into it. Fourth Beach is the only show in town for this 16-day run, and it’s a bit of a mixed bag. We’ve got some solid swell windows, but the wind is going to be a factor more often than not.
Right off the bat, we’re looking at a bit of a slow start. The first few days are a write-off. Friday the 17th and Saturday the 18th are pretty messy – strong cross-off winds and lumpy conditions mean you’re better off staying on the beach. The swell is there, around 3ft to 5ft from the SW with a decent 13-14 second period, but the wind just shreds it. The wave energy is moderate (636-1101), but it’s not doing you any favours.
Things start to get interesting around Sunday the 19th. The swell picks up to 7ft from the SW, period stretching to 16 seconds, and the combined energy jumps to 2062. That’s a solid, moderate-to-strong push. But the wind is cross-off in the morning, and by afternoon it’s a light cross-onshore, so it’s only marginal. Still, for the more experienced crew, there’s a chance to snag some clean-ish waves early.
Now, the standout. Monday the 20th is your best bet early on. The morning session is looking excellent – 7ft of SSW swell, 13-second period, and a light offshore breeze from the N. That’s clean, lined-up surf. The combined energy is strong (1669), and it’s got *excellent surf conditions for experienced surfers* written all over it. This is a proper window. The water temperature is 62°F, which is about average for this time of year, so no surprises there.
The following days have some pulse, but the wind keeps getting in the way. Tuesday the 21st morning has a clean 5ft SSW swell, but the afternoon gets choppy. Wednesday the 22nd sees the swell jump to 10ft, which is big and powerful (3456 energy), but it’s cross-on and messy – only for the die-hards, and honestly, it’s more of a kite-surfing day than a paddle session.
We get a clean, excellent window again on Thursday the 23rd morning. Another 8ft SSW swell, 14-second period, light offshore wind. That’s a solid, powerful wave for the experienced surfer. The energy is strong (2035). If you can get out there early, it’s worth it.
The end of the first week and into the second week is a bit of a gap. Friday the 24th through Saturday the 25th are poor, with messy winds and dropping swell. Sunday the 26th is glassy but small, with only 4ft of swell – not much to work with.
Then we get a long-range highlight. Monday the 27th is another excellent morning. 7ft of SSW swell, 15-second period, cross-off wind. That’s a clean, long-period groundswell with strong energy (2295). Remember, long-period swells like this can be a bit straight at beach breaks, but with the offshore wind, Fourth Beach should shape up nicely.
After that, it’s a bit of a messy end. Tuesday the 28th and Wednesday the 29th are blown out by strong winds, and the 30th is a total mess with 25 mph winds. But then, the absolute best of the run arrives on Friday the 31st. The morning is glassy, with 6ft of SSW swell at 16 seconds. The afternoon is even better – dead calm, glassy conditions, with 5ft of swell. That’s *excellent surf conditions* with a combined energy of 1593. This is the one to circle on the calendar. For a break that’s fairly exposed and consistent, this is a rare moment of perfection.
And finally, into August, we get a solid Saturday morning on the 1st. 5ft of SW swell, 17-second period, clean cross-off wind. The energy is strong (2360). It’s a promising end to the forecast.
So, for the best on offer, I’d say Monday the 20th and Friday the 31st are your true standouts. The 20th has that powerful, clean morning with offshore wind, and the 31st is just glassy perfection. Keep an eye on the 27th too, as a long-range promising option. The rest of the time, you’ll be fighting the wind, but if you’re patient, there are some gems.
Rusty.
