The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get straight into what’s cooking for this stretch of coast. Honestly, I’ve gotta be upfront with you – this 16-day window is looking pretty grim for a paddle. The swell is there, but the wind and conditions are just not playing ball. We’re looking at a solid run of poor surf quality, with the first real glimmer of hope not showing up until the very end of the period.
The water temp is sitting at 83° at the start, which is bang on average for this time of year, so no surprises there.
The first few weeks are a write-off. From Monday the 13th right through to the morning of Monday the 27th, it’s a consistent grind of east wind – mostly cross or cross-on – and short-period, weak-to-moderate energy (energy values between 158 and 357). The swell is coming from the east, but with a period of just 7 to 8 seconds, it’s all wind-slop and chop. The waves are mostly in the 4ft to 6ft range, but with that cross-shore breeze, it’s lumpy, messy, and not worth your time. The only break we’ve got on the radar is Flamand, and it’s inconsistent at the best of times. With that east wind blowing 15-19 mph, it’s going to be a choppy, frustrating session. Save your energy.
There is a brief, slightly cleaner window on the morning of the 21st and 22nd, and again on the morning of the 23rd, where the wind ticks around to a cross-offshore direction, cleaning things up a bit. But the swell is still short-period and weak (energy between 123 and 238), so even if it’s glassy, the waves will be weak and soft. Not a standout.
The only real standout in this whole 16-day slog is on Tuesday, July 28th. The morning session at Flamand shows a jump in swell energy (598), with a 7ft swell from the east. The wind is cross-offshore, which means clean conditions. The period is still short at 8 seconds, so it’s not a classic groundswell, but that’s a lot of water moving. The energy is moderate-to-strong (598), which is the highest we see. For a spot that’s fairly exposed, this could deliver some punchy, clean waves. The downside? It’s a Tuesday, so the crowds might be light, but Flamand can get busy sometimes. Also, with 7ft, this is getting into expert territory – beginners, sit this one out. The afternoon sees the wind swing cross again, so the window is tight.
So, the bottom line: the first 15 days are a bust. The only real chance for a decent wave is the morning of July 28th. Keep an eye on the charts, but for now, I’d be doing something else with your time.
Rusty.
