The Lowdown

Hey crew, Rusty here. Let’s call it like it is – the outlook for Church Point over the next 16 days is a total dud. The surf is flat for the entire forecast period, so don’t bother waxing up. There’s a long stretch starting from the 3rd of August with no real waves on offer, and it barely improves by the end.

On Monday the 3rd of August, there’s nothing. The swell is zero, with combined wave energy at 0. The wind is a fresh 19 mph from the east, offshore, but with no swell, the ocean is just glassy and empty. The water temp is about normal for the season. This flat spell continues through the first week, with winds holding steady at 16 to 19 mph offshore. Wednesday the 5th, Thursday the 6th, Friday the 7th – all poor conditions, with swell heights of 0.3 ft at best from the north, and periods around 10 to 12 seconds, but it’s not enough to surf.

Into the second week, from Monday the 10th of August, it’s the same story. The wind stays offshore and clean from the east at 12 to 19 mph, but the swell remains a ghost. The combined energy never gets above 3, and the swell height tops out at 0.3 ft. There’s a tiny pulse on Friday the 14th of August morning with a 0.3 ft north swell at 13 seconds, but it’s still rated as poor. The wind cranks up to 25 mph on the 13th and 18th, a strong offshore breeze that’s clean but hard to paddle into – again, no waves anyway.

Church Point is a reef break that’s fairly consistent and open to north swells, but it doesn’t matter when the ocean is this flat. The optimum swell direction is north, but there’s zero energy. For a spot meant for advanced surfers, there’s nothing here. With the strong offshore winds and flat surf, this setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing. The near-term forecast is reliable, and it’s telling us to sit this one out. Hang tight, mates – it can’t stay flat forever, but for now, it’s a long wait.
