The Lowdown

Alright, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you. Looking at this forecast, the honest truth is that for the next 16 days, there isn’t a single session I’d get excited about paddling out for. It’s a pretty grim run for surf. The main issue is a persistent, strong easterly wind that’s going to be chopping everything up from the cross-on direction, making it messy and uninviting.

The first recommendation doesn’t come until Wednesday, August 5th, with a little pulse of swell but the wind is already ruining it. That poor quality just continues day after day. There’s a noticeable jump in swell size around the 13th and 14th of August, with heights climbing to 6-6 ft, and the combined energy ramps up strongly (303 to 424). But it’s all wave comment of "poor surf conditions" and "fresh cross-onshore and lumpy" – that’s just wind-blown slop, not surfable waves. By the 15th of August, the swell peaks at 8 ft from the ENE with a period of 8 seconds and the energy hits a powerful 977, but that’s paired with a strong breeze. That kind of size and short period, onshore, is a mess.

For the whole outlook, I’d only consider Barclays if you’re a hardcore kiter. The combination of significant swell, poor surf shape, and strong side wind makes that break look far more interesting for kite surfing than traditional paddle surfing. The water temperature anomaly isn't mentioned so we’ll skip that detail.

It’s a rough run. But in an area like this, when the wind locks in onshore for a stretch, blank runs are just part of the deal. Forecasts can change, but for now, leave the board in the bag.

Information about the Barclays Surf forecast

The above surf forecast table for Barclays provides essential information for determining whether the surfing conditions will be good over the next 16 days. A general guide to surfing at Barclays can be found by selecting the local surf guide option on the grey menu. Our Barclays surf forecast is unique since it includes wave energy (power) that defines the real feel of the surf rather than just the height or the period. If you surf the same spot (Barclays) regularly then make a mental note of the wave energy from the surf forecast table each time you go. Very soon you may start to choose your surf days based on the wave energy alone combined with our forecast of favourable offshore wind conditions. Our star ratings will help here and of course you will also find the usual wave height and period predictions on our surf forecasts as well as a full break down of the swell components under our advanced users option (to reveal that, click the little Einstein character under the tide times).

Further information to help with frequently asked questions about our surf forecast for Barclays may be found under the help tab on the top menu and also by moving your mouse over the question marks on the surf forecast table itself. Please always bear in mind that the forecast is for near-shore open water and local factors at each surf break influence the actual breaking wave height, such as the beach / reef profile, water depths offshore and shelter.
