G’day, Rusty here. Look, I’ve gotta be straight with you – the next 16 days are a total write-off for Ahtopol. There’s nothing on the cards, not a single wave worth paddling for. The whole run from 16 August right through to 31 August is a flat, empty stretch of ocean with zero surf energy (0 combined energy). It’s pretty grim.
The water’s sitting at 78°F which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so that’s about the only thing that’s comfortable. Normally at Ahtopol (a point break that’s inconsistent even when there is swell), you’d hope for something from the east to make it work, but there’s just no swell at all. We get some glassy mornings – like the 17th, 21st, 22nd, 23rd, 24th, 25th, and 26th August – with that NNE or NE wind dropping to nothing, but it doesn’t matter because there’s nothing to ride. The afternoons are mostly a chop-fest with moderate cross-onshore breezes, but again, no waves.
This is a long, blank run. For a spot that’s already inconsistent, it’s not unusual to see a stretch like this. Still, it won’t stay poor forever – forecasts can change. But for now, save your energy and leave the boards at home.
