Surf Forecasts:
The Lowdown
Right, let’s get down to it.
Ahtopol is a point break that only rarely works around here, and for the whole 16-day window there is zero combined swell energy (0) – nothing to push any waves through. The water is 76° and that is 5° warmer than usual for the time of year, so if you’re just going for a float you’ll be fine, but for surfing? Nada. The first recommendation doesn’t even show up until the 15th of September, and even then it’s just a flat line.
We see Tuesday the 15th morning with some clouds and a wind from the NNE at 9 mph as a cross-onshore breeze – not that it matters because there is no surf to mess up. The afternoon is more of the same with cloud cover and 12 mph onshore. This flat pattern keeps up day after day: Wednesday the 16th, Thursday the 17th, all with cross-onshore winds and no wave energy. There are a couple of mornings, like Friday the 18th and Saturday the 19th, that go clean or glassy with light offshore or glass conditions – Friday morning has 3 mph from the NW cross-offshore and Saturday morning is glassy with a 3 mph SW wind – but it is completely flat. That is a real shame because the conditions would have been lovely for a wave that isn’t there.
The gap of nothingness runs from the 15th right through to the 30th of September. There is one point on the 27th where a bit of rain showers move in with a light ESE wind, but again – zero swell. The 28th and 29th keep the pattern of clean cross-offshore mornings followed by cross-onshore afternoons, but the combined wave energy never moves off zero. For a point break that is optimised for an easterly swell direction, there is simply no swell from any direction.
The truth is, if you want to paddle a surfboard at Ahtopol in this window, you’re out of luck. On a breezy day, the beach setup might look more interesting for a kite than a paddle. For now, I’d leave the boards in the car and watch the horizon.
Rusty.
