The Lowdown
G'day, Rusty here. Let's be straight with you – the next couple of weeks at Agios Dimitros look like a complete write-off for any sort of decent surf. There's just nothing doing. The swell energy is flat, absolutely zero, and that's the way it's going to stay for the foreseeable future. It's a real bummer.
We've got a solid run of days stretching from now, right through the end of August and into the first week of September, with nothing but a blank ocean. All that clean, offshore wind we're seeing – light breezes, glassy conditions, even some fresh offshores – is just blowing over a flat sea. It's cruel. The water is sitting at a balmy 81° which is much warmer than normal for this time of year, but there's no point in even looking at a board.
This blank spell carries on deep into September. It's not until Friday the 11th that we even see a blip on the charts, but it's a tragic one. A tiny 1ft south swell shows up with a period of 5 seconds – that's short-period junk with barely any energy. The wind is screaming from the north at 19 mph, so while it's offshore, it's more of a kiteboarding gale than surfable. That afternoon the wind gets even worse, hitting 34 mph. Forget paddling into that.
The following weekend offers more of the same. A tiny 1ft south swell on the 13th is the best it gets, and that's saying nothing. The combined swell energy is only 3 – so weak it couldn't knock a sandal off your foot. There's simply nothing to get excited about. No standouts, no hope. This is one of those stretches where the area just goes dead. Forecasts can change, but right now, it's a solid 16-day gap of flatness.
Rusty.
