Supertubes Surf Forecast and Surf Report

Alright, let’s talk about this stretch. We’ve got a world-class reef called Supertubes on the menu. Over the next 16 days, it’s a tale of some real potential mixed with bursts of total chaos—wind and swell will keep you on your toes.

Water temp is a regular 60°, nothing strange for this time of year.

We kick off on Thursday morning, August 6th with a clean one. A 4ft southwest swell, light easterly cross-offshore breeze at 6 mph, and the surface is glassy. That swell has a long 16-second interval and the combined energy is 582—solid, lined-up power. It’s not a monster, but for a Thursday dawn patrol, it’s the real deal.

Later that Thursday afternoon, the swell bumps to 5ft, still southwest, but the wind goes cross-shore from the SSE at 9 mph. Energy jumps to 1018, but you’ll have some cross-chop. The morning session is the winner.

Friday the 7th through Saturday the 8th keeps the swell between 5ft and 5ft, with cross-offshore winds from the north or NNW. The periods are long—16 to 17 seconds—and the energy is pumping into the 1200s. This is quality groundswell, but the forecast says it’s marginal due to tide. For experienced surfers on this reef, the mornings are clean and offer solid walls.

Then the wheels fall off. Saturday afternoon (August 8th) a west cross-onshore hits 22 mph, and by Sunday the 9th, a near-gale blows 31 mph from the west, throwing 10ft of short-period, wind-affected junk. Energy hits 2635, but it’s all mess. Kite surfers might love it; paddle surfers, stay home.

Monday the 10th drops to 8ft to 8ft southwest swell, but the wind is a fresh cross-shore, making it lumpy. Energy is massive at 3717, but it’s ugly. For the hardcore only.

Tuesday the 11th has a clean morning with 4ft southwest swell and a cross-offshore breeze—looks tidy but low energy (807). By afternoon, a spike to 10ft of short-period (9 seconds) WSW swell with fresh cross-shore wind? Messy and too big.

From Wednesday the 12th through Friday the 14th, we’re buried under 10ft to 7ft of southwest groundswell, but the wind is onshore or cross-onshore at times blowing straight on at 22 mph. Energy is insane—up to 5374—but the quality is poor. The break is getting hammered. The exception is Thursday morning, August 13th: a massive 10ft swell with a 17-second period and energy of 4359, but with a light onshore wind from the SSW at only 6 mph. For experts only—the size is enormous, but the clean conditions could make it a heavy, memorable session.

We finally get a breather. Sunday, August 16th is a standout. Morning has clean 4ft southwest swell with a light cross-offshore breeze from the north. Energy is a manageable 668. By afternoon, it goes glassy—a 3 mph southerly, barely a whisper—on a 4ft swell. Perfect, clean reef waves.

The next week starts mellow. Tuesday, August 18th offers a gem for experienced surfers: 5ft southwest swell, a 17-second interval (very long period groundswell that this reef will love), an offshore wind from the NNW at 6 mph, and energy of 1000. The forecast calls this excellent. The waves will have plenty of punch and shape, though sets will be spaced out.

After that, it’s a mix. Some clean mornings with small swell (3ft to 5ft) are possible, but strong winds return and eventually another big onshore pulse of 8ft swell from the SSW around Thursday, August 20th. That late stuff is all onshore and big—not worth it.

In short: The best windows for clean, quality waves are Thursday morning, August 6th and Sunday, August 16th (especially the afternoon glass-off). For experienced surfers wanting real power, Tuesday, August 18th is your pick. The huge, clean-but-heavy swell on Thursday morning, August 13th is for experts only. The rest is blown out or too big. Pick your moment.
