The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here again, but in feet and miles.
We’re looking at a pretty lean run for the next couple of weeks. Smidstrop is the only spot on the cards, and honestly, it’s gonna be a waiting game. The first solid surf doesn’t show up until Tuesday, August 11th, and even then, it’s not the magic bullet. The water’s sitting at 65°, which is about average for this time of year, nothing to write home about.
The first proper swell window is Tuesday, August 11th. On Tuesday morning, a solid NW swell rolls in at 7ft, with a period of 7 seconds. That’s a short period, meaning it’s more windswell than groundswell, so it’ll be a bit lumpy and less defined. The combined energy is moderate (427). The wind is WNW cross-off at 25 mph, which is strong – it’ll keep the surface clean, but that’s a lot of breeze to deal with. It’s a beach and point setup, so with that size and wind, this is more of a session for solid surfers; beginners should sit this one out. Tuesday afternoon sees the swell drop to 6ft (energy 259), still with that NW direction and a 6-second period. Wind stays cross-off, but it’s still a strong breeze at 19 mph. Not ideal, but it’s the best we’ve got in the first week.
Then there’s a long gap of nothing until Monday, August 17th. On Monday morning, another NW swell arrives at 7ft with a 6-second period and moderate energy (359). Wind is W at 22 mph, cross-off again. This is shaping up to be similar to the 11th – a bit of a brute, not much finesse. The afternoon drops to 6ft (energy 216) with the same wind conditions. For a beach and point, this kind of short-period, moderate-to-large swell with strong cross-off wind is going to be a bit of a handful. It might actually be more interesting for kite surfing than a clean paddle session.
So, the standout? It’s a toss-up between the morning of the 11th and the morning of the 17th. I’d lean towards the 11th of August, purely because it’s the first pulse and the energy is a bit higher. But don’t expect perfection. The rest of the days are flat or have tiny, weak waves. The 14th of August morning has glassy conditions, but zero swell. That’s the cruelest tease.
