The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s talk about what’s on the menu for Ricks Reef over the next couple of weeks.
First off, we’ve got a dry spell. From now right through to the morning of Monday 27 July, there’s nothing worth paddling out for. That’s a solid nine‑day gap with tiny, weak swell and messy cross‑shore winds. The water’s sitting at 83°F, which is pretty much normal for this time of year – no surprises there.
Things finally start looking up on the afternoon of Monday 27 July. That’s when a nice NNW groundswell shows up, pushing 5ft with a 13‑second period (moderate combined energy of 595). The wind swings offshore from the SE at 12 mph, and the forecast calls for clean conditions. This is a reef break for advanced surfers only – it’s inconsistent and can get crowded sometimes, but when it lines up like this it’s a proper little gem. The swell direction (NNW) is close to the optimum N, so expect some good shaped waves peeling down the reef. Keep in mind that Monday 27 July is more than a week away, so while the outlook is promising, it’s worth checking back closer to the day.
The following morning, Tuesday 28 July, offers a decent backup. Swell drops to 4ft from the NNW, still with a long 12‑second period, but the wind turns cross‑offshore from the ENE at 6 mph. The combined energy is 370 – still moderate. It’ll be clean, but the quality isn’t quite as high as the Monday afternoon session. Still, a solid option if you missed the peak.
After that, the wind gets messy again. By Wednesday afternoon the swell picks up to 5ft, but it’s cross‑onshore and short‑period (8 seconds), so no good. Then through the end of the month and into early August, the swell gets bigger – up to 8ft on Sunday 2 August – but with strong cross‑onshore winds and lumpy conditions, it’s a write‑off for paddle surfing. That kind of setup might appeal to the kite crowd, but not for us.
So mark your calendar: Monday 27 July afternoon is the standout. Tuesday morning is a solid second choice. The rest of the window is a no‑go. Stay patient, and keep an eye on that Monday window.
