The Lowdown

Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for La Passe.

Straight up, this is a tough stretch. The outlook for the next two weeks is a pretty grim run. The problem is relentless onshore wind. For almost the entire period, we’ve got a stiff breeze blowing straight onto the reef, and that’s just trashing the wave face. You’re looking at a solid run of days where the surf is simply poor quality.

For the first week, starting Wednesday the 5th, the wind is howling from the SSE and SE at 18 to 25 mph, right onshore. Even though there’s plenty of swell – we’re talking moderate to strong wave energy with readings over 500 and hitting over 1500 on the 6th – the wind makes it a write-off for a clean paddle. The swell height is between 5 ft and 10 ft, but it’s blown-out. The water temp is sitting at 82°, which is much warmer than usual for this time of year, but that doesn’t make the surfing any better.

This rough pattern keeps up right through the weekend and into the middle of the following week. By Tuesday the 11th, the wind drops a touch to a moderate breeze, but it’s still onshore and the surf is still poor. On the 12th and 13th, it gets even messier as the wind swings cross-onshore, making for lumpy, choppy conditions. The swell energy is still up there, with some readings over 1500, but it’s just not coming together.

The second week is more of the same. From the 16th onward, the swell starts to drop off a bit, coming down from 7 ft to around 3 ft by the 20th, but the wind stays onshore and the quality remains poor. The wave energy drops into the low hundreds by the end of the run, so it’s fading out to small and weak.

Honestly, there is not a single standout session in this whole 16-day window. The combination of constant onshore wind and a swell direction that doesn’t match the optimum for La Passe (which wants a southerly direction) means you’re better off leaving the board in the car. Given the strong winds and the fact this is a reef break, the conditions might be more interesting for kite surfing than for a proper paddle session. Keep an eye on it, but for now, it’s a blank run.

Rusty.
