The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Gotta be straight with you – this is a tough one to call. Right now, the outlook for Ikaria Mesakti Beach is pretty bleak. Looks like we’re staring down the barrel of a long stretch with no real surf to get excited about. The wind is all wrong, and the swell is just not doing us any favours. We’re looking at a gap of about 16 days with no decent recommendations.

The main issue is the wind. It’s hammering in from the north and northwest, mostly onshore or cross-onshore, and that’s just murdering any chance of clean waves. The first couple of days, from Saturday the 1st of August right through to the morning of Monday the 10th of August, it’s a constant battle. The wind is fresh, the waves are tiny, and when there is a little bump, it’s all lumpy and choppy. The combined swell energy is mostly weak, with values like 96, 38, 27, and even down to 5, showing just how little power is in the water. The swell periods are short, between 4 and 8 seconds, so it’s just messy wind swell. For a beginner spot, this is just a flat, blown-out mess. If you’re a kitesurfer, the setup might look interesting with the strong cross-onshore winds on some days, but for a paddle surfer, it’s a no-go.

Now, there’s a tiny glimmer of hope on the 10th of August, Monday morning. The wind drops to a glassy calm from the SSE, and the water goes flat. But the swell is still just 0.7m (2 ft) from the NW, with a combined energy of 31, so it’s too weak to ride. The afternoon gets a little more interesting: a 1.2m (4 ft) swell from the NNW with a light cross-offshore wind from the SSW and a clean surface. The combined energy is 72, still weak. The 11th of August, Tuesday, has a similar story: a 1.1m to 1.2m (4 ft to 4 ft) swell from the north, clean conditions, but the energy is still weak at 56 and 62. This is the best of a bad bunch, but it’s not a standout. The swell is small, the period is short at 5 seconds, and for a beach break, that short period swell is just going to be weak and crumbly. It’s not worth getting your hopes up for.

After that, it’s back to the same old story: onshore winds and tiny, weak surf through to the 16th of August. The water temperature is about average for the time of year, so nothing to write home about there.

So, what’s the call? The best on offer is the morning of the 10th of August and the 11th of August, where the wind is light and clean. The waves will be small, weak, and short-period, but for a beginner, it’s the only window where you might get a few knee-high rollers without getting blown off your board. But honestly, don’t hold your breath. This is a blank run. It’s rare to see a full 16-day stretch with no quality surf, but it happens. Forecasts can change, so keep an eye on it, but for now, I’d be doing something else.

Rusty.
