The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here with your local surf outlook. Let’s get into it.

Alright, so we’re looking at a stretch of mostly marginal, choppy surf here at Barranquito. This reef/jetty spot is our only option, and it’s consistent, but don’t get too excited – the conditions are a bit of a battle. The water is sitting at 71°, which is a solid 9° warmer than usual for this time of year, so it’s a real treat to be in the water without a full suit.

The first solid chance to get wet kicks off on Tuesday, August 5th in the morning. We’ve got a 4ft swell from the SW, with a nice long period of 13 seconds. That’s proper groundswell energy, and it’ll give the waves some punch. The wind is a light cross-onshore, so it’s a bit bumpy, but it’s small and manageable. The combined energy is moderate at 639.

The standout window, though, is the morning of Monday, August 10th. The swell holds at 3ft from the SW, but the period jumps to a very long 18 seconds – that’s some serious ocean energy traveling a long way. The wind switches to a light cross-shore, making it much cleaner. The combined energy here is a solid 1049, which is decent for this spot. That’s the best combo we’ve got: clean faces, long period groundswell, and not too much size. It’s a good one for intermediates.

Later that same day, the afternoon of the 10th, is also a solid bet with another 4ft SW swell and a 13-second period, still with gentle cross-shore wind. Combined energy is 1006.

Now, look, the rest of the forecast is a real mixed bag. Most of the other days are plagued by cross-onshore winds that are going to make things choppy. The swell heights are generally small, bouncing between 2ft and 5ft, but the wind is rarely kind. On Tuesday, August 12th, the afternoon swell jumps to 5ft, but it’s short period at 8 seconds, and we’ve got a moderate cross-shore. That’s a bit of a mess, and honestly, with that short period and the chop, it’s looking more interesting for a kite session than a paddle.

The second week has a few flickers of hope. The morning of Monday, August 17th has a 4ft SW swell, 16 second period, and light cross-onshore wind. The combined energy is strong at 1132. It’s promising, but we’re a long way out, so keep one eye on it. The afternoon of that same day has a 4ft SW swell, 15 second period, and light offshore wind – that’s a cleaner setup. That’s a long-range call to note.

Overall, there’s no huge swell coming, and the wind is a persistent problem. The best of it is definitely the morning of Monday, August 10th – that’s your session. After that, keep your expectations low, and be ready to dodge the chop.

Rusty out.
