The Lowdown

G’day, this is Rusty. Not much to get excited about for this stretch, I’ll tell you that straight. There’s only one break on the map – Yoff Beach – and it’s a long, rough road to get to the only halfway decent session.

For the first twelve days, from Saturday 12th September all the way to Wednesday 23rd September, every report is poor. Swell heights are small, periods are short, and the wind is onshore or cross-onshore, making everything a choppy mess. Even when the energy jumps to 245 and 305 on the 19th, that 1.2m to 1.4m swell with an 8-second period and onshore wind is just ugly. No reason to paddle out.

Then finally, on Thursday morning, 24th September, things line up. The wind turns east cross-off, light and clean, and the water goes glassy. The swell is a clean 2ft out of the NW with a solid 13-second period – that longer period gives the waves some proper push and shape. Combined energy is at 256, moderate but well-directed. Water temp is a touch warmer than average at 85°, and with the wind offshore, this is the one window worth chasing. Crowds are possible here, but it’ll be worth it.

After that, it’s back to onshore wind and small, short-period waves. Friday 25th September has cross-off winds with 3ft to 4ft waves, but the period drops to 7 seconds and the energy is weak – nothing to write home about. The weekend through Sunday 27th September serves up onshore wind and chopped-out 5ft surf with a short 8-second period. Too big for the conditions, and no shape to speak of.

So your only real chance is Thursday morning, 24th September. The rest of the 16 days is a near-total blank – that’s the way it can be around here.
