The Lowdown
G’day, I’m Rusty. Let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for Kalim Beach over the next couple of weeks.
Truth is, mate, it’s a pretty bleak run. The whole 16-day window is filled with “poor surf conditions” across every single record, so there’s no standout day to get excited about. The swell is there, but it’s constantly onshore, short-period, and messy. The first decent bit of size doesn’t even show up until the 21st of July, and even then, the wind and weather are against it.
We start off on Thursday afternoon, 16 July, with a clean 3 ft from the west, but the wind is onshore and the 8-second period is weak. The combined energy is only 154 (moderate), and the water temp is sitting at 86°, which is about average for this time of year given the anomaly of +0.7°. The next few days are more of the same – small, choppy, and hardly worth paddling out for. From the 17th to the 20th, we’re looking at 1.0 ft to 3 ft waves, all with short periods between 6 and 8 seconds, and onshore winds from the west-northwest or west-southwest. The energy stays weak to moderate, ranging from 58 to 90.
The swell builds a little from the 21st of July, with 4 ft to 4 ft waves and combined energy reaching 109 to 124 (moderate), but the period is still a poor 6 seconds, and the onshore wind is 20 km/h. The conditions for the 22nd of July are a bit better in size – 4 ft to 5 ft, with moderate energy up to 186 – but the wind remains onshore and the risk of thunderstorms is constant. It’s the same story through the 23rd and 24th: small, short-period, blown-out surf.
By the 25th of July, we see the swell push to 4 ft to 5 ft, with energy climbing to 228 (moderate), but the wind is picking up to 25–30 km/h from the west, making it thoroughly ugly. The 26th of July brings the biggest surf of the run – 5 ft to 6 ft, with energy up to 323 (strong) – but the wind is a fresh 30–35 km/h onshore, and the period is still only 7 seconds. That’s blown-out, choppy, and really only worth a look if you’re a masochist or chasing a thrashing.
The final days from the 27th of July to the 31st keep the swell around 4 ft to 6 ft, with energy peaking at 531 (strong) on the 31st, but the onshore winds never let up, and the period rarely climbs above 8 seconds. The 30th of July afternoon has a cross-onshore breeze from the southwest, which is slightly better, but the 6 ft swell is still short-period and messy.
Bottom line: there’s no decent surf anywhere in this 16-day window. The spot is a reef that’s inconsistent and exposed to the west, and the wind is almost always onshore. The setup here looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing, given the constant onshore wind and building swell. For us wave riders, it’s a write-off. Forecasts can change, though, so don’t give up hope entirely.
Rusty.
