The Lowdown

G’day, Rusty here. Let’s cut to it: the surf at Chalky Point for the next couple of weeks is looking shabby. It’s a beach and reef setup, exposed to the swell, but that east wind is going to ruin just about everything. Water temp is 83°, which is normal for this time of year.

The first week is a total loss. Cross-onshore winds, mostly from the east, are going to keep things chopped up. Swell heights are mostly in the 2ft to 5ft range, with short 6 to 7 second periods, making it weak and messy. The energy is weak to moderate, in the low hundreds to low 200s. You’d be wasting your time trying to find a clean one. There’s a small bump on the 8th with 5ft, but it’s still sloppy.

The middle of the period brings more size, but the wind doesn’t change. From the 12th onwards, the swell picks up, but the cross-onshore wind persists. By the 13th and 14th, we’re seeing waves of 6ft to 7ft with moderate to strong energy (394 to 631), but it’s all still choppy. Nothing to get excited about.

Then things get properly ugly. Around the 15th of August, the swell surges to 10ft with strong energy, over 1500. That’s a lot of water, and with 30 to 35 km/h cross-onshore winds, it’s going to be a full-on stormy mess. Not a paddle-out. A short 9-second period means it’s not even a well-organized groundswell. Just a big, blown-out ocean.

The last few days start to ease off, dropping from 8ft on the 16th down to around 4ft by the 19th. But it’s the same story – onshore wind and short-period chop. There is no standout, no hidden gem. Chalky Point is just going to be blown out. If you’re into kite surfing, this may look fun with all that wind and chop, but for a proper surf, it’s a hard no.

Looking at the whole picture, the swell is more consistent, but the quality is just not there. With the wind not giving up, you’re better off finding a sheltered nook or just sitting this one out. Forecasts can change, but right now, it’s a blank run.

Rusty out.
