The Lowdown
Alright, let’s get real about Leftovers. The next 16 days are looking grim. This is a reef break that’s an advanced, inconsistent wave, and the name fits – it’s the scraps of a messy swell window. The first few days, through the 4th and 5th, are all thunderstorms and nasty cross/onshore winds, with the swell at 1 to 1 ft from the NNE. The energy is moderate (649), but it’s just a mess. Don’t bother.
The main event is a big, powerful swell moving in from the 7th of August. We’re talking 2 ft on Friday afternoon, building to 3 ft by Sunday, and peaking at 4 to 4 ft from the west through the 10th, 11th, and 12th. The combined energy hits 5925 on the 11th – that’s very strong. But the wind is a constant enemy. It’s cross-on or cross-shore at 15 to 28 mph from the WSW or SW, which is going to make it lumpy, choppy, and borderline unrideable. At 4 to 4 ft, this is strictly for experts, and even then, the quality will be poor. The water is 85°, which is about average for this time of year.
The one standout, if you can call it that, is the morning of the 8th of August. The swell is 2 ft from the west, with a moderate 12-second period, and the wind is just a cross-shore breeze. The energy is 2243, which is solid. It’s a marginal day, but if you’re an advanced surfer and you’re itching, that’s your window. Crowds are possible here, so it might be worth a look. For the rest of the time, this setup is more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing. The wind is just too strong.
The second week is flat or blown out. From the 17th, the swell drops to 0.2 ft, and the wind is still howling at 22-28 mph. There’s a gap of at least a week with no real recommendations. It’s a dry spell, and for this spot, that’s pretty normal. Stay patient.
