The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let's talk about what we've got on the table for the next couple of weeks. To be straight with you, it's looking pretty lean. There’s not a whole lot to get excited about, and most of the time you’ll be battling small, weak waves. The overall pattern is one of those stretches where you have to really want it.
We kick things off on Thursday the 27th of August at Hanna Park/Mayport Poles. It’s a beach and pier setup, and it’s exposed to the swell, but the numbers aren't doing us any favours. The swell is coming from the ESE, but it's mostly in the ankle-to-knee high range, and that period is all over the shop—mostly short and weak. The combined energy is low (20), and the water temp is a warm 82°, which is about average for this time of year. Wind wise, there’s a light S breeze in the morning that’s cross, so it’s not ideal. Morning sessions are looking cleaner than the afternoons when that SE wind picks up and chops things out.
Friday the 28th and Saturday the 29th see a similar story. Tiny waves with occasional glassy moments, especially Saturday morning with that S wind dropping to glass. You’ll find some chest-high waves on the sets, but the energy (24) is still very weak. Sunday the 30th through to about the 2nd of September is pretty much the same small stuff, with a lot of onshore wind making it messy.
Now, there is a little glimmer in the second week. On Wednesday the 2nd of September, we see the combined swell energy jump to 159—that’s moderate energy, but the swell height is only 2 ft to 3 ft. The period stretches out to 11 seconds, which means it’s a proper groundswell, but at that size it’s not going to light up the beach break. It’ll be a bit cleaner in the morning with light E winds though, so if you’re desperate for a longboard, that morning might be your best bet, even with onshore winds in the afternoon. That little groundswell bump fades fast by Thursday the 3rd.
From the 4th of September through to the 11th, it's back to the same old story: tiny surf, often poor conditions, and a lot of cross-on and onshore wind. The 7th and 8th of September see a little pulse of energy from the NE, but the wind is howling, making it a write-off. The swell energy gets up to 102 on Tuesday the 8th, but with fresh NE winds at 19 mph, it’s going to be a choppy, ugly mess at this exposed beach break.
Honestly, if you’re looking for a standout, there isn’t one. The best of a bad bunch is the morning of Wednesday the 2nd of September with that small but longer period groundswell and light wind. It’s not worth paddling out for anything else during this stretch. It’s a long, flat run with very little to offer.
Rusty.
