The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s talk about what’s coming up for Steamer Lane-Middle Peak. It’s a bit of a slow start, but there’s a solid run of good surf on the horizon that’s worth getting excited about.

Right off the bat, the water is sitting at 62°, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year – a real treat, so you can leave the thickest wetsuit at home.

We’ve got a few days of small, weak conditions to get through. Saturday the 22nd and Sunday the 23rd are pretty gutless, with tiny waves and only a light breeze. Not worth paddling out for. The combined wave energy is a measly 33 (weak energy) on Saturday, and it’s not much better on Sunday. Monday the 24th through Wednesday the 26th remain flat, with weak energy readings under 100 most of the time. You’ll be waiting for something to push through.

Thursday the 27th afternoon shows a little pulse, with 4ft from the WNW and an offshore wind, but the energy is only moderate (257) and the period is short. It’s surfable, but nothing to write home about.

Now, here’s where it gets good. Friday the 28th morning is the first standout. We’re looking at 5ft of NW swell with a glassy surface – that’s clean, calm conditions that will make the reef look like a mirror. The energy is strong (438) and the period is a solid 8 seconds. This is the kind of morning you set the alarm for.

Saturday the 29th is another winner. The morning session has 5ft NW swell, glassy again, and the energy is even stronger at 489. The afternoon holds 5ft from the WNW with offshore winds, keeping it clean. This is good, consistent, punchy surf.

Sunday the 30th afternoon is also clean and glassy with 5ft WNW swell and energy at 300. Monday the 31st keeps the run going with 5ft to 5ft waves and clean conditions. The consistency is very consistent here, so you can expect solid lines.

The best of the whole outlook, though, might be Tuesday the 1st of September morning. Swell jumps to 6ft from the NW with a period of 8 seconds, and the combined energy hits 640 – that’s strong, powerful surf. The wind is light and cross-offshore, keeping it clean. This is a big, proper groundswell that will really light up the peak. Not for beginners at this size, but for the experienced crew, this is the one to circle.

The rest of the first week of September stays surfable, with moderate energy and clean conditions, but the size drops off a bit. By the weekend of the 5th and 6th, it fades back to small and weak, with energy dropping below 100.

So, the long story short: tough start, but a killer run from Friday the 28th through Tuesday the 1st of September. The standouts are Saturday the 29th morning for the glassy, powerful 5ft NW swell, and Tuesday the 1st of September morning for the biggest, most energetic swell of the window. Get on it.

Rusty.
