The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be real – this is a tough run for Manhattan 26th Street. The next couple of weeks are looking pretty flat and not very inspiring. There’s a good stretch of poor conditions through the first week of August, with almost nothing to get excited about.

We’re looking at small, weak swells. The water is a very unusual 72°F right now, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year – that’s the one thing that’s a bit different.

The first chance of anything borderline comes around Friday, August 7th. The morning will see a small swell from the SSW at 1ft, but with a long period of 19 seconds pushing combined energy up to 233 (moderate). The wind will be light and cross-shore, which is a positive, but it’s still a tiny wave. It’s rated as marginal, so don’t expect much.

Saturday, August 8th is similar. Morning brings a 2ft SSW swell, period 17 seconds, and light cross-onshore winds. That energy is at 231 (moderate). Again, it’s a marginal call.

The best bet in this whole outlook might be the morning of Wednesday, August 12th. We’ll have a 2ft SSW swell with a period of 18 seconds, giving us a combined energy of 206 (moderate). The wind stays light and cross-onshore. It’s a small wave, but the longer period and light wind could make it a little more fun than the rest.

The following Saturday morning, August 15th, the swell ticks up to 3ft from the SSW with a 16-second period, and energy hits 367 (moderate). The wind is light, but it’s still a cross-onshore breeze. It’s the biggest swell of the run, but the scores are still a zero. It’s a better bet for a longboard or a bigger board, but it’s not going to be a standout.

Honestly, there’s nothing here that’s a true standout. The conditions are mostly poor, and the swell is tiny. For a beginner spot, these waves are fine for a paddle, but there’s no real power. If you’re desperate, the better mornings look to be August 12th and 15th with the light winds and slightly longer period, but don’t expect a classic day.

Rusty.
