The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what Jordan River's got cooking for us over the next couple of weeks.

Straight up, the start is quiet. We're looking at Monday the 17th and Tuesday the 18th with tiny, weak swells and not much to get excited about. It's not until Wednesday the 19th that things start to wake up. The standout period is going to be from Wednesday morning through Thursday the 20th. Wednesday morning (19th August) is looking like the pick of the whole run. We've got a clean 4ft swell rolling in from the west with a solid 12-second period, giving those waves a bit of push. The combined energy is sitting at a moderate 398, and the morning is glassy with that light SSE air. That’s proper clean surf. Thursday morning the 20th is a very close second – another glassy morning with 4ft of west swell and a moderate energy reading of 341. For a reef and point break like Jordan River, that west direction is money, and the long period will help shape up some nice lines.

Things get smaller and more ordinary through Friday and the weekend. Friday the 21st has a bit of waist-high swell but it’s nothing special, and the wind starts to mess with it. Saturday the 22nd is pretty poor, with a short, weak 8-second swell and only about 3ft. That’s not worth paddling out for.

The second week gets interesting again, but it's a bit of a tease. There's a glassy spell on Monday the 24th and Tuesday the 25th, but the swell is tiny. The real promise shows up on Tuesday the 25th afternoon and Wednesday the 26th morning. Tuesday afternoon the 25th sees a 2ft groundswell from the west-southwest with a very long 16-second period, pushing a moderate energy of 267, and it’s glassy. That’s a promising call for clean, lined-up waves at the point, though it’s on the smaller side. Wednesday the 26th starts clean but the wind picks up and turns cross-shore by afternoon, ruining the party. After that, it’s a mixed bag of poor conditions and onshore winds right through to the end of the run on September 1st. The last notable chance might be Sunday the 30th morning, with a glassy 1ft long-period swell from the southwest, but it’s small.

So, to keep it simple: Wednesday morning the 19th is your best bet for a proper session. Thursday morning the 20th is right there with it. Everything else is either too small, too windy, or both. Keep your eyes on Tuesday afternoon the 25th as a longer-range possibility, but it’s a smaller swell, so don't get your hopes too high.
