The Lowdown

Right, grab a coffee, let’s see what’s happening at Brandenburg Westerland (Sylt). I’ll be straight with you mate – the next couple of weeks are a bit of a mixed bag, and honestly, for the first week there’s pretty much nothing doing. Water temp is sitting around 64° which is dead average for this time of year, so at least you won’t freeze.

We’ve got a long stretch of flatness or poor conditions from now through to the 7th of August. The swell is tiny, the wind is mostly cross-on or onshore, and the energy readings are pathetically low – we’re talking less than 100 for most of that run, which is barely a ripple. The 5th of August sees a brief clean window with offshore winds from the SE and a glassy 2 ft swell, but it’s too small to get excited about. You’d be floating around on a log.

The first real standout appears on the morning of Saturday the 8th of August. We’ve got a 6 ft NW swell pushing in, with a period of 7 seconds. The combined energy hits 292 – that’s moderate energy, a proper step up. The wind is a gentle cross-shore from the north, with only slight cross-chop. It’s considered marginal for tide, but given the size, this is the biggest and most interesting surf of the whole window. At 6 ft, it’s getting a bit much for beginners, but it’s not yet into expert-only territory. The direction matches the optimum NW swell direction perfectly. Crowds are sometimes a thing here, so you might have company.

The 9th of August keeps some size, with a 5 ft to 5 ft NW swell, but the wind swings onshore from the WNW, making it lumpy and less appealing. After that, it’s back to small, clean, but weak conditions through the 10th and 11th, and then another pulse of NW swell on the 12th of August, with 5 ft and 233 energy, but again the wind is onshore from the W to WNW, so it’s not clean.

So, the clear winner is the morning of the 8th of August. It’s the only time the swell size, direction, and wind all come together to offer something decent. The rest of the time, you’re either looking at tiny dribble or wind-affected slop. It’s a bit of a desert out there until that first week of August is done.
