When Wainui gets to this size, the impact of breaking waves on the shallow sandbars is pretty heavy so good duck-diving skills are a big help. Two small swells interacted this day to make for large waves at places open to both directions - Schools, Pines, Chalet and Whales as well as the centre breaks of Makorori. Breaks open to one direction but not the other, like Sponge Bay, Midway and Tolaga, were only waist high.
