“From So Cal. But lived in G.B. from 1975 to 1979. Was the only local in all of southern Oregon then. Always by myself but found great surf from Port Orford south to Eureka.
Gold beach is all beach break with shifting peaks that break close to shore.
Back then I would drive on the beach south from the Harbour until I found a spot I liked.
On the north side of the harbor their is a spot that breaks off the jetty with incredible lefts.
On a big west / south west swell the Harbour entrance can break. Perfect lefts at 6 to 10 feet but a short ride into the channel. Very rare to see this but pure fun when it does.
Early fall is the best time of year. Summer has too much wind and the winters are very dangerous with a lot of logs and drift wood in the water.
Sharks, yes but I never saw one. Only Dead Sea lions that had large bites out of their sides. They come to eat salmon and sharks come to eat them. Was bumped by a male sea lion once.
Crowds, then none today I doubt it. The beach break has plenty of room so it shouldn't be an issue.
Back then I always had my board in the truck so when I saw good surf I surfed. Never paid attension to swell direction. Beware, it's not So. Cal.”
