The Lowdown
Right, grab a coffee, let’s talk about the next couple of weeks for Zandvoort. I’ll be straight with you, mate – it’s looking like a bit of a lean spell for us. The surf forecast is pretty much a write-off for the first week and a half. There’s a long gap from now until Sunday, August 16th, where the boards are staying in the van. The water is sitting at 71°F with a massive warm anomaly of 7°F, so it’s unusually warm for the time of year, but that doesn't help the waves.
We finally see a little pulse of life on the morning of Sunday, August 16th. Zandvoort is a sandbar break, exposed to the swell, and it’s set to be inconsistent. The wind will be light and offshore from the ENE, giving us a clean window. The swell is a weak 3ft from the WSW, with a short period of 5 seconds and combined energy of only 61, so it’s flat and weak. It’s surfable, but it’s what I’d call a “begrudgingly go out” kind of day. It’s the only thing on offer, so if you’re desperate, you’ll be sliding around on a foamie.
The following Wednesday morning, August 19th, gives us another chance. The wind is offshore from the S again, keeping the surface clean. The swell is still a weak 3ft from the W, with a 5-second period and combined energy of 62. Same story – small, weak, but surfable. After that, the swell tries to push a bit bigger on August 20th, with 5ft to 6ft from the WNW, but the wind turns onshore and nasty, making it choppy and messy. That’s a no-go.
Honestly, there’s no standout here. The best of a bad bunch is the morning of the 16th, purely because it’s the only time with a glassy offshore wind and a little bit of swell. It’s a beginner-level wave, but with the period so short, it’ll be a mushy, crumbly closeout. Don’t expect any barrels.
Rusty.
