The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here with the outlook for Westward Beach/Point Dume. This spot is a classic intermediate break, fairly consistent and exposed to the SW, with the best swell from the SW. Crowds are often around, so expect company. The next couple of weeks start slow but have a couple of real gems later on.
From Sunday 19 July through Wednesday 23 July, the surf is tiny – about 2ft to 3.5ft – and the wind is mostly cross‑onshore or onshore, making it choppy. The combined energy ranges from 412 to 620, nothing to get excited about. Not worth paddling out.
Thursday 24 July morning brings a 2ft SW swell with a very long 24‑second period, but the size is barely there. Energy 563, light cross‑onshore. Still marginal.
Friday 25 July to Monday 27 July sees a slow build. Saturday 25 July morning has 2.3ft SW at 21 seconds, energy 840, with light onshore wind. Still not clean. Monday 27 July morning shows 3.6ft SW at 18 seconds, energy 855, with light onshore wind – but that’s onshore for this break, so not ideal. Score is okay but not great.
Now the standouts. Thursday 30 July morning: 4.3ft SSE swell with a 16‑second period, energy 1220. Winds are light from the SSE, cross‑onshore but very light, so the surf will be clean. That’s a solid groundswell for intermediates. The afternoon holds 4.9ft SSE at 15 seconds, energy 1372, with light onshore wind – still good but morning is better.
Friday 31 July morning: 6.2ft S swell at 15 seconds, energy 1687. Wind light from the SW, onshore – a bit lumpy but rideable for experienced surfers. Getting too big for beginners. The afternoon jumps to 6.6ft but gets a moderate cross‑onshore from the W, making it choppy.
Saturday 1 August is the real winner. Morning: 6.6ft S swell at 13 seconds, energy 1412, with light cross‑onshore from the S. Afternoon: 5.9ft S at 13 seconds, energy 1133, with light cross‑onshore from the WSW. Both have the highest internal scores of the forecast. The size is solid, period is decent, and winds are light enough for clean waves. Crowds will be likely, but for these waves, it’s worth it.
After that, Sunday 2 August drops to 3.6ft SSW at 11 seconds, energy 356, and then Monday 3 August is a tiny 1.6ft with a moderate cross‑shore
