The Lowdown
Alright, let’s talk Sombrio Beach. The next couple of weeks are a flat, windy mess. Don’t expect much.
From Thursday the 23rd of July through the end of the month, the swell is tiny—1 to 2 feet out of the SW or WNW. The combined energy is weak, staying under 300 (105 to 287), so there’s no power. The water temp is 51°, which is a whopping 7° colder than usual—that’s crazy cold, so a thick wetsuit is a must. Most days the wind is cross or cross-shore, so the surface is chopped. The only half-decent moment is the morning of Sunday the 26th of July, with glassy conditions and a 1-foot SW swell at 21 seconds. That’s a long-period groundswell, but it’s so small it’s barely rideable. The wave comment says “surfable waves but very ordinary conditions,” and I’d say that’s about right—not worth getting wet.
The first week of August is no better. Monday the 3rd of August sees a bit more size—3 to 2 feet from the west, but the period is short at 7 to 8 seconds, so it’s weak and mushy. The combined energy is moderate (145 to 102), but the wind is cross-on, so it’s messy. Tuesday the 4th of August afternoon has a brief moment of glassy wind with 3 feet of west swell, but again, short period (7 seconds) means it’s not gonna hold up. The only possible window is Thursday the 6th of August morning. Swell bumps up to 4 feet from the west, with a combined energy of 284 (moderate), but the wind is cross-on at 6 mph, so it’s lumpy. The period is 9 seconds, so it’s not terrible, but it’s not clean. This is more of a kite-surfing setup than a paddle-surfing one, given the chop and onshore wind.
Bottom line: there’s no surf worth chasing here for the next 16 days. The breaks are fairly consistent, but the swell is just too small and the wind is never really offshore. Sometimes it stays poor for a while, but forecasts can change. For now, I’d save the energy.
Rusty.
