The Lowdown
G'day, Rusty here. Let's be straight with you – it’s been a tough run for Scheveningen Pier in this outlook period. We’re looking at a long, dry spell of flat, onshore, junky conditions for the next two weeks, with only one real glimmer of hope right at the very end.
Right from the get-go, starting Tuesday the 18th of August, it’s just not happening. We’ve got weak windswell around 4ft coming from the west with a short, gutless period of only 5 seconds. The wind is cross-onshore and lumpy, so it’s all chop and no shape. This grim pattern continues day after day, with the swell staying small and messy. The water is currently a very warm 71°F, which is a massive 6°F warmer than usual for this time of year – that’s really unusual. It feels like a bath, but unfortunately, it’s a bath with no waves.
We go through the rest of August with nothing but tiny, weak surf. The combined energy of all swells barely gets above 86 for a short time, but mostly sits in the weak range of 9 to 67. There’s a brief moment on Friday morning the 21st of August with clean conditions and a cross-offshore breeze, but the swell is only 1.0ft – not enough to ride. It’s a similar story on Tuesday the 25th with another clean spell and 2ft swell, but again, just not enough push.
The drought finally breaks on Tuesday the 1st of September. This is your one standout window. The morning brings a solid 6ft swell from the west with a moderate offshore wind from the SSE. The combined energy jumps to 212, which is moderate wave energy. It will be clean, with some power, and that offshore breeze will make for some lined-up walls at the pier. This is the only surf worth mentioning, so if you’re free, that’s the morning to be in the water. Note the afternoon shifts to cross-shore and starts to get choppier, so get it while it's clean.
The next day, Wednesday the 2nd, the swell drops back to 4ft and the wind goes cross-onshore again, putting us right back into the messy stuff. After that, we’re back to nothing.
So, the summary is harsh: nearly 14 days of zilch, with one promising but isolated morning on September 1st. For the rest, it’s a kitesurfer’s wind forecast, not a surfer’s wave forecast.
Stay patient and circle that Tuesday morning. Rusty out.
