The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here, checking in on the Baja surf scene. We've got a long-range look at San Pedrito in Todos Santos, and I gotta be straight with you—it's a tough stretch ahead. The next few days are mostly a write-off, but there's a little glimmer of hope if you're patient.

Right now, and for the rest of this week, the water is a balmy 88°, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year. The problem is the wind and the swell aren't playing ball. Most conditions are "poor" or "marginal" at best, so if you're itching for a paddle, you're going to be disappointed. There's a long gap of several days with no real recommendations.

Now, let's talk about the one real standout. It's not happening anytime soon, so mark your calendars. On Tuesday the 8th of September and Wednesday the 9th, things finally look promising. For the Tuesday morning session, we've got clean surf with a small, playful 3ft SSW swell. The wind is a light cross-offshore breeze from the NNW, making for some clean lines. The swell period is a healthy 13 seconds, so that's some proper groundswell energy (537 energy) wrapping in. That afternoon stays clean with a 2ft SW swell pushing a very long 16-second period, which is some serious energy (506 energy) for its size. This sort of long-period swell is perfect for a reef break like San Pedrito (Todos Santos), giving you well-shaped, powerful waves with nice long lulls between sets. It's an advanced wave at the best of times, and the "often" crowds mean you'll likely have some company.

Earlier, on Wednesday the 2nd of September, we see a bigger pulse of swell—5ft from the S on the morning session with moderate energy (1149) and a clean offshore wind. But the overall quality is still just "marginal," so it doesn't have the same appeal as that cleaner, more refined window later in the month. Later that afternoon, the wind cranks up to a fresh 22 mph cross-onshore, and the 7ft S swell is just going to be a lumpy mess.

For the second week, it's a lot of the same story. There are a few "marginal" calls, but nothing that really gets the heart pumping. Most conditions are "poor" with messy wind. If you've got a kite, that bigger S swell with the strong cross-onshore winds on the 2nd and 3rd of September might look interesting, but for a paddle surfer, it's a hard pass.

Alright, the real opportunity is that two-day window in early September. Save your energy for that.

Rusty.
