The Lowdown
Alright, let’s talk about Newcastle Beach. I’ve been watching this stretch, and honestly, it’s a bit of a slow burn over the next couple of weeks. We’ve got some fun windows, but we’re going to have to be patient.
The first few days are pretty grim. Thursday the 20th is a write-off, with a weak 2ft ENE windswell and a cross-shore breeze chopping it all up. Friday the 21st cleans up a bit with some offshore wind, but there’s barely any size – just 2ft and 1ft. Saturday the 22nd is flat. It’s a classic late-winter lull, and it lasts through the weekend. No point even getting wet.
We start to see a pulse of south swell arrive on Sunday the 23rd. It’s small and a bit messy in the afternoon, but you can feel it coming. The longer-period (10-11 second) swell is a good sign. By Monday the 24th, the energy is building (227 combined energy) and the morning looks clean with light cross-offshore winds. It’s still small, maybe 3ft, but it’s surfable. This is our first real chance, but it’s not the standout.
Then we get that pulse on Wednesday the 26th. That’s the one. The swell jumps to 8ft out of the south with a shorter 8-second period. The energy readings are up at 948, which is a serious jump. It’s going to be powerful and a bit lumpy, and with that size, it’s pushing into expert-only territory for the morning. The afternoon drops to 7ft and stays clean-ish. Newcastle Beach is a beach and reef set-up, so with that much juice and a short period, it could be a bit of a close-out. This is the big one on offer, but it’s not for the faint of heart.
After that, it fades back down. Thursday and Friday (27th-28th) have some small, clean waves, but nothing to get excited about. The second week is looking pretty quiet, to be honest. There’s a bit of energy around the 30th and 31st with some long-period south swell (13-16 seconds), but it’s small and the winds are poor, mostly onshore. There’s a glassy morning on the 1st of September with a tiny 2ft wave, and another on the 2nd, but it’s marginal at best.
So, the standout here is that Wednesday the 26th. It’s the only day with real size and power. The water temp is 63°, which is about 2° colder than usual for this time of year, so you’ll want the hood and gloves.
For the rest of the run, it’s mostly small and ordinary, with a few clean mornings if you’re desperate for a foam-ball session. The longer period swells at the end of the month could be fun if a bank lines up, but it’s a bit of a gamble.
Hang in there. It tends not to stay this poor for long around here.
