The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here again, switching to feet and miles per hour for the imperial crew.
Let’s talk Doolin Point. This is a top-tier reef break for experts only, exposed to the west. Water temp is about 63°F, a touch warmer than usual for this time of year – not bad.
The forecast is lean. You’ve got a long dry spell to start. The first real chance comes on Monday, August 24th. Sunday the 23rd is flat with 1ft west swell and weak 8-second period – barely a pulse.
Monday morning shows 3ft of WNW swell at 11 seconds, a proper groundswell. Combined energy is 162 – moderate. Light offshore breeze from the ESE keeps it clean. It’s surfable but nothing special.
The standout, and I mean the *only* true standout in the whole 16 days, is Monday afternoon. Swell holds at 3ft from the west, still with that long 11-second period, and combined energy jumps to 245. Wind is light cross-offshore from the NE, and conditions are called *good*. For an expert reef like this, with a long-period west swell and clean winds, that’s the moment. Crowds are often around, so expect company.
Tuesday, August 25th has 3ft west swell at 9 seconds in the morning with a light offshore from the east – clean but ordinary. The afternoon goes glassy with 3ft and a light southerly breeze. Glassy! But energy is dropping to 102.
From Wednesday, August 26th all the way through to Sunday, September 7th, it’s mostly poor. Swell sticks around waist-high or less, but the wind is onshore, cross-on, or just too strong. There are bigger days – like Friday, September 4th morning with 6ft from the WSW at 10 seconds and combined energy of 778 – that’s strong. But wind is howling onshore at 28 mph. Total washout for surfing. Kite surfers might have a look, but for a paddle board, forget it.
Saturday, September 5th afternoon eases the wind a bit with 4ft west swell and a gentle breeze, but the quality is gone. The last week is all “poor surf conditions,” lumpy and onshore.
So here’s the call: Monday, August 24th afternoon is your best and only real shot. Everything else is a battle with the wind or just too small. It’s a long quiet stretch, but these things don’t last forever.
Rusty.
