Tioman Island Surf Guide

Tioman Island in Peninsular Malaysia is an exposed reef break that does not work very often. Offshore winds blow from the west southwest. Windswells are much more typical than groudswells and the ideal wave angle is from the northeast. Waves at the reef are both lefts and rights. An uncrowded break, even when it is working.

“I came to Tioman Island for a SurfYoga retreat at Ombak House in Juara. The beach is incredible, so clean and not crowded with people.

The waves were good, this was my first time learning to surf. Close to the Ombak House on the north end of Mentawak Beach is smaller waves, maybe 1-2 feet, perfect to learn. If you go more south down the beach the wave gets bigger and bigger, I see guys surfing 10+ feet! I was too scared to try, but maybe next year when I come back I will be good enough to surf the "Coral" break.

If you want to learn surfing definitely try the camp at Ombak House, they were so patient and good teachers to me, I stood up on my first day!”
