Ballydavid Surf Guide

Ballydavid in County Kerry is an exposed reef break that only works once in a while. Summer in particular tends to be flat. Offshore winds blow from the south. Windswells and groundswells in equal measure and the ideal swell angle is from the northwest. There is a right hand reef break. The quality of the surf isn't affected by the tide. Take care of rocks in the line up.

Rob Davies from New Zealand
“A right reef break located just north of the jetty and close to two good pubs in Ballydavid, on the east side of Smerwick Harbour, not far from Dingle. The pub closest to the break specialises in local seafood.

Ballydavid reef needs a north or north-northwest swell which often happens when a deep low tracks between Iceland and Scotland; a regular occurence in autumn and winter.

Unfortunately, the wave tends to be very wind affected and onshore or cross-shore winds are very common. Glassy days are rare on this SW edge of Europe.

If you do catch it with a solid north swell and light or SE winds, it will be excellent.”
