Awana Surf Guide

Awana in Great Barrier Island is a fairly exposed reef break that has pretty consitent surf and can work at any time of the year. Ideal winds are from the west. Groundswells are more common than windswells and the ideal swell angle is from the northeast. Both left and right reef breaks. Even when there are waves, it's not likley to be crowded. Beware of rips, sharks.

Moggy from Australia
“Awana is basically beachbreak setup. Awana creek at North end of beach feeds fresh deposits of sand down the beach, particularly after heavy rain. Several rocky outcrops towards Southern end can favour bank formation. Never a guarantee of waves, but worth a check if swell too small for Okiwi or Shark Alley. If there are good banks the waves tend to have more power than the Islands other beaches.”
