Bicas Swell Statistics, April: All Swell – Any Wind

The rose diagram describes the variation of swells directed at Bicas through a typical April. It is based on 2880 NWW3 model predictions since 2007 (values every 3 hours). The wave model does not forecast wind or surf right at the shore so we have chosen the most applicable grid node based on what we know about Bicas. In the case of Bicas, the best grid node is 26 km away (16 miles).

The rose diagram describes the distribution of swell sizes and swell direction, while the graph at the bottom shows the same thing without direction information. Five colours represent increasing wave sizes. Very small swells of less than 0.5m (1.5 feet) high are shown in blue. These happened only 11% of the time. Green and yellow illustrate increasing swell sizes and red represents the highest swells, greater than >3m (>10ft). In each graph, the area of any colour is proportional to how frequently that size swell was forecast.

The diagram suggests that the prevailing swell direction, shown by the biggest spokes, was WNW, whereas the the dominant wind blows from the NW. Because the wave model he the dominant wind blows frs feedthe mms="s7ss="secondary">3.0Thion illow nform high tse of reery 3 hogrewascoresgoogletag.cmd.pus Thenoeattemogleofrs feenear-btio oeffs, <.>imageallows f" /> Swell Statdiv>
