The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s talk about what’s happening at La Push over the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, I gotta be straight with you – it’s looking like a pretty quiet stretch. The swell is small and the wind is mostly cross or cross-onshore, so we’re not exactly looking at any classic days. The best we can hope for is a few marginal, rideable little waves, but nothing is screaming "go-time." There’s a long gap of pretty poor conditions from the start that really sets the tone. The first few days are mostly poor surf with very small waves. From around the 20th of August onward, it stays pretty grim with consistent cross-onshore winds and only tiny swell.
The only real standout comes right at the very end of the forecast.
### La Push
The water temperature is sitting at about 58°, which is right around normal for this time of year, so no surprises there.
Tuesday afternoon, 11 August: The first session of the period is a letdown. We’ve got a 1ft swell from the SW, with a 14-second period, and the wind is onshore from the W at 6 mph. The combined energy is weak (114). Honestly, it’s poor surf conditions. Not worth paddling out for.
Wednesday morning, 12 August: The swell picks up a bit to 3ft from the W, but it’s a short period of 6 seconds with a cross-onshore wind. The energy is moderate (233). It’s still a marginal call. The afternoon is even smaller at 2ft, with a long 18-second period from the SW, but again cross-onshore and marginal (336 energy).
Thursday morning, 13 August: A 4ft swell from the WNW, period of 7 seconds, with cross-shore winds. It’s still marginal (301 energy). The afternoon goes back to 2ft SW swell. Nothing to get excited about.
Friday, 14 August through to Monday, 18 August: The pattern holds – tiny swells between 2ft and 3ft, mostly from the SW, with cross-onshore or onshore winds. The energy is moderate (228 to 480), but the surf quality is poor. A few sessions are marked as marginal, but the wind is never clean and offshore. A clear window on Saturday afternoon, 15 August, shows a 2ft SW swell with 18-second period and light onshore wind, but it’s still just a dribbler.
Tuesday morning, 19 August: A slight uptick with a 3ft W swell, 12-second period, and onshore wind from the W at 6 mph. The energy is strong (512), but the wind is onshore, so it’s going to be messy. The afternoon has a 3ft W swell with a 12-second period, but the wind picks up to 9 mph from the NW, making it cross-onshore and choppy (560 energy).
Wednesday morning, 20 August: The best of a bad bunch. A 3ft swell from the W, 12-second period, with onshore winds from the W at 6 mph. The energy is strong (512). It’s the only session that scores a "2" out of the whole period, which tells you how thin the pickings are. Still, it’s onshore and marginal, so it’s only for the desperate.
Thursday, 21 August through to Wednesday, 27 August: The forecast goes completely flat. The swell drops to 1ft to 3ft, periods are short (8 to 17 seconds), and the wind is a relentless cross-onshore from the NW and NNW, often blowing at 9 to 12 mph. The combined energy is weak to moderate (114 to 358). These are all rated as poor surf conditions. Honestly, for a surfer, this is a total write-off.
If you’ve got a kite, this is more interesting than a paddleboard. The consistent cross-onshore wind and small, weak swell are not what we want for a surf session.
So, what’s the call? The best option on offer is the morning of 20 August, which is promising but still marginal. Everything else is a no-go. This is one of those stretches where the ocean just isn’t cooperating. Don’t hold your breath.
Rusty.
