As you drive south from Kaikoura, Oaro is the small settlement where the road leaves the coast. It's a wave-magnet best surfed low to mid and on a small swell. On this small easterly swell Oaro threw up head-high faces while Mangamaunu was knee to waist high at best. Iron Gate was also good in these conditions and is the most sheltered from a NW wind.
