The Classics Menu
1) American Route 101

Where: Los Angeles to Seattle
Distance: 800 miles
Waves: iconic pointbreaks, weird reefbreaks, epic big waves, miles of mostly uncrowded beachbreaks and everything in between.
What To Bring: Every wetsuit you have, three boards, hiking boots, a bike and a sense of adventure.
The Itinerary
Plan for about a 16-day trip, perfect for our new extended surf forecast, with a stop every two days or so. Start off ticking a surf culture check point: Malibu First Point, and while we are hitting the classics, then motor towards Rincon Point in Santa Barbara and Ventura. Once sick of the crowds, cruise through Big Sur, taking in Monterey before making a beeline to Steamer Lane in Santa Cruz. It’s also worth checking out Mavericks, as the view looking over Half Moon Bay on a large NW swell is jaw-dropping. Longer drives are needed through the endless coastline of Oregon. Stick to Highway 101, which hugs the coast leading into the surf hub of Lincoln City, with its surrounding beachbreaks and reefs, including big-wave comp spot Nelscott. Then head to Short Sands Beach, Oswald West State Park, in Oregon. This sheltered cove inside a stunning old-growth forest delivers a punchy, consistent beach breaks and sums up Oregon surfing — beautiful, raw, and wonderfully uncrowded. The finish line is Westport, Washington’s surf capital, which picks up solid NW swells and has the vibes of pure frontier surfing.
2) The Continental Classic:

Where: Portugal Algarve: From Faro and Back Again
Distance: 500 miles
Waves: The Algarve offers world-class surfing year-round in predominantly beachbreaks, with the odd sneaky pointbreak and reef.
What To Bring: A 3/2 wetsuit, two boards, sunscreen, hiking boots and a golf gear.
The Itinerary: Starting in Faro, you’ll do a loop with stops at Lagos, Monchique, Arrifana, Sagres, Portimão and back to Faro. You’ll need a week to check out the Algarve’s picture-perfect beaches, mountain hideaways, and lively towns. Lagos is a coastal gem known for its golden beaches and dramatic cliffs. The surf spot of Meia Praia is a highlight, Salema can be perfect for learners and Zavial for experienced surfers. For a change, try the pine forests, mountain views, and mineral springs in the hills of Monchique. Next is Arrifana, a tiny surf town perched on the cliffs with the region’s most consistent waves. Further west on “the edge of the world”, Sagres offers the relatively calm waters of the Algarve on one side, and the open ocean of the North Atlantic on the other. Beginners hit Martinhal and Mareta, while the more exposed bay of Tonel has waves for intermediates and experts. On the loop back to Faro, hit Portimão’s wide sandy stretches for a relaxed beach day.

3) Northern Exposure

Where: Vancouver Island, Canada
What you need: A 5/4mm wetsuit, boots, gloves and a hood. A mid-length surfboard to handle all waves. Extra winter coats, a sense of adventure, patience and humour.
The waves: The mix of reefs and beachbreaks is cold and fickle, and varies in quality, but the stunning scenery and wilderness make every surf special.
The Itinerary: Pick up the van in Vancouver and head to Vancouver Island via BC Ferries. The sail through Howe Sound with the mountains rising straight from the water is one of the great van life moments, even before you've caught a wave. First stop is Jordan River Regional Park, on the West Coast Road, with its mix of quality, but fickle, reef and pointbreak waves. Next is Sombrio Beach, Juan de Fuca Provincial Park, where a 10-minute trail walk through ancient rainforest leads you to the beach, and hopefully, waves. On the way to the island’s surf HQ at Tofino, stop for a night in the nearby but a little more core surf town of Ucluelet. Next morning hit Tofino and try Cox Bay, with its consistent beach breaks on a mile of crescent-shaped white sand beach, all framed by stunning, old-growth, temperate rainforests. Or if the wind is from the northwest, hit Chesterman Beach. Last night is at Long Beach, Pacific Rim National Park. It has fun waves and some of the most beautiful and wild scenery on the planet.
4) The Dublin Loop aka The Craic

Where: Return Dublin trip via Bundoran, Lahinch and Dingle
Distance: 650 miles
What You Need: A 4/3 and 5/4 wetsuit, booties and hood, extra fibreglass, a thirst, and a love of the craic.
The Waves: Ireland has established itself as a world-class surfing destination. Sure its cold, and often wet, but the quality reef breaks and general vibes make it a must-visit.
Itinerary: Head due west from the capital and gun it for the surf town of Bundoran. In the centre of town is the consistent wave of The Peak, but there are soft beachbreaks and heavy slabs within a 10-mile radius, as well as the big-wave spot and beautiful bay of Mullaghmore Bay. Next heading along the coast is Easkey, one of Ireland's oldest and most revered breaks. The right and left sit alongside a ruined castle, making it one of the most cinematic lineups in Europe.
A green inland country run gets you to Galway, which, while not a surf hot spot, is one of the best music towns in all of Ireland. After a night on the tiles and Guinness, Lahinch is an obvious beacon. It has a main beach good for learners, while just to the north is the Cliffs of Moher, one of the world’s geographical marvels that also hosts some of Ireland's most famous big waves like Aileens. Take a tack through Limerick (insert rhyme here), and the last surf stop is on the Dingle Peninsula. Hit the known spots like Inch Beach and Brandon Bay that provide consistent beachies and reefs. Then it's just a boomerang back to Dublin, a four-hour drive, and a night out in one of Europe’s best cities.
