The Lowdown

G’day, Rusty here with the straight-up on Stockton Avenue. Honestly, this 16-day run is underwhelming. The first few days are tiny, with waves barely 1ft to 2ft from the SW and onshore wind—total flatness. Not worth a paddle.

Things try to pick up on Friday the 7th and Saturday the 8th, with swell climbing to about 2ft from the SSW, carrying a very long period of 19 seconds, giving it some real grunt. Combined energy hits 418 by Saturday morning—that’s moderate. But the wind is onshore or light cross-on, so the surface is bumpy. Decent groundswell, just not clean. The SSW direction is a good match for the reef.

Sunday the 9th brings a spike of 6ft from the NW, but with a short 9-second period and cross-onshore wind. Energy jumps to 1249 (strong), but it’s messy and poorly shaped. Not a surfer’s wave—more of a kite day.

From Monday the 10th through Thursday the 13th, we’re back to 4ft to 4ft from the WNW, short periods, onshore or cross-on. All marginal or poor.

The standout comes Monday the 17th. Swell is 3ft from the SSW, 14-second period, and the wind goes glassy—NNE at 0 mph, dead calm. Combined energy is 307 (moderate), and the call is “good surf conditions.” That’s the cleanest we’ll see. The SSW direction lines up perfectly for the reef. Small, but smooth and uncrowded.

After that, it fades back into marginal surf, with a short-period bump to 5ft on Thursday the 20th but choppy and onshore.

Water temp is 58°, right on the seasonal average.

Bottom line: most of this outlook is a dud, but that glassy Monday the 17th is a genuine pocket of calm. Don’t sleep on it.

Rusty.
