Matt from Jersey
“To surf at St Ouen there must be not too much swell or period as with most fairly flat beaches. About 4-5 ft with about 12-13 seconds max period is about as good as it gets. ANY MORE SIZE AND/OR PERIOD WILL START TO CLOSE OUT THE BEACH.

The second aspect about St Ouens is the tide. We have fairly big tides in Jersey. About an hour and a half after low tide is good for the Watersplash, if the tide is over 29-30 ft then it will hit the sea wall, so plenty of backwash, bearing in mind we have tides up to 39+ ft you see the dilemma for Jersey surfers. When the tide is hitting the wall you can try some other spots either side of the Watersplash, the further you go from the Watersplash will deter how much tide it can handle.

If the surf is blown out by a big westerly or south westerly storm you have to head for the north coast and surf Greve, a dumpy shorebreak, great for bodyboarding and barrels if your of a fairly good standard. If it's howling westerly or north west you can head to St Brelades which is quite sheletered, whilst lacking some of the power of St Ouens if can have a nice shape depending on the tide.

The forecasts on this website are absolutely spot on for Jersey, much more accurate than some " Magic " forecasts, especially the power of the swell, if you see it creeping above 500-600 joules then you also know it may start to close out due to the larger period the swell most likely has.”
