Praia Seca Surf Guide

Praia Seca in Rio de Janeiro Norte is an exposed beach break that has quite reliable surf. Autumn and winter are the optimum times of year for waves. Works best in offshore winds from the north. Groundswells more frequent than windswells and the best swell direction is from the southeast. The beach break provides left and right handers. The quality of the surf isn't affected by the tide. Even when there are waves, it's not likley to be crowded. Surfing here means negotiating dangerous rips.

VINICIUS from Brazil
“I have been surfing there for more than 20 years and when it happens, it's the best. Hollow and shallow than can break bones, overhead size or more.
Drive through the coast and choose your spot. In a really good day (better with no wind or N / NE offshore) there will be many left and right hands.
Best season is May to July, when more swells appear and the wind is not so strong. And warm water. With bigger swell high tide makes some difference.

At summertime, is mostly flat and the water tends to be cold (17°C or less) and East trade wind is strong. Dawn patrol can bring good surprises. Narrow and fast outlines will work good to ride inside the barrels.”
