Visitor reviews of Magillian Point surf break
(NOTE: Reviews may be edited by our content team for the purposes of ensuring accurate and relevant information)
“Editors comments: Before reading the critical review below, please keep in mind that Magillian is very sheltered from the WNW swell that was running at the the time of these trips and that the 11 second period was not sufficient to refract much energy into the Bay. We are careful to state that our forecasts are for open-water swells and encourage users to make their own conclusions about how open water conditions relate to surf at sheltered breaks like Magillian.
The info youse guys at surf-forecast on Magilligan needs looked at. Yesterday you had it at 4stars with 2metres in a westerly swell. I did think "how can that be?" as I thought Magilligan is completely sheltered from westerly swell by Malin Head, but I gave your forecast the benefit of the doubt and headed up there as I had a bit of extra time... what a disappointment - Castlerock had 2ft, Downhill had 2-3ft, but as I drove up Benone to the west towards Magilligan it dropped off gradually to nothing at the point. I nearly bogged the jeep as the sand up there is very soft. Luckily I got out by using the ramp at "The Point" hostelry...
Thats 2x wasted journeys as a few months back I sent a mate up there based on your forecasts, and there was nothing, and he DID get bogged down.”
