Dimitris Pavlakis from Greece
“Kolymbithra is (was) a decent beach, facing NE. Its easterly end is crowded with umbrellas and local bathers, has two decent tavernas and an OK hotel for this neck of the woods (ain't the Hamptons). The surf is fine for toddlers to play and occasionally get carried away in the undertow, and OK for surfers, about 20% of the time -- if you don't mind e.coli, that is...

The water is, unfortunately, polluted. Raw sewage from nearby villages drains into an adjacent lagoon and seeps in the bay. Waste-water from nearby buildings also seeps in the bay through the sandy beach. An accidental sewage tank dump a couple of years ago resulted in confirmed dysentery cases. There is good open water circulation with northerly winds, and pollution becomes less of a problem.

A shack appeared this year with surf rentals and lessons. The legality of the shack is questioned, but it is located in the cleaner, less polluted, end of the bay. The operator is a nice and friendly person, but has alienated locals who used the spot as a swimming hole. A rag tag group of campers has also filled the area with visible human waste -- watch your step -- as there is no infrastructure, camping is not allowed, and campers trespass private properties, much to the annoyance of local owners.

Caveat emptor”
