Alright, Rusty here, and I’ve got the lowdown on the waves for the next couple of weeks. Straight up, it’s a tough start. We’re looking at a long, flat spell. The first chance of anything decent won’t be until the middle of the second week, so we’ve got to wait it out.
The first surfable window shows up on the morning of August 19th at Hossegor - Les Culs Nuls. The water is sitting at a warm 76°, which is *much warmer than normal* for this time of year—a solid 5° above the average. You’ll be leaving the wetsuit at home for sure.
That morning, the 19th, is your first real standout. We’ve got a clean 4ft swell rolling in from the NW, with a period of 8 seconds. But the real story is the wind. It’s glassy. Dead calm. ENE breeze at just 3 mph. That’s going to leave the surface like a mirror. The combined energy is moderate at 224, so there’s some push behind it. The swell direction is a bit north of the optimum W, but with conditions that clean, you’d be a fool to miss it. Crowds are a possibility here, so get out early.
The afternoon of the 19th gets messy. The swell picks up to 5ft, but the wind swings to a cross-shore NNW breeze at 12 mph, chopping it all up. Not worth it.
The next real highlight is the morning of August 20th. This one’s even better in size. We’ve got a 5ft swell from the NW, with a period of 9 seconds. The wind is light offshore from the E at 6 mph, keeping it clean. The combined energy is strong at 384. This is a proper wave, though at 5ft it’s getting a bit punchy for beginners. After that, the 21st of August sees a drop-off. The swell drops to 3ft in the morning with a moderate offshore E wind at 12 mph. It’s surfable, but ordinary. The energy is weak at 85.
The last couple of days of the forecast window (22nd and 23rd) are a slide back into the doldrums with tiny waves and onshore or cross-shore winds. Nothing to write home about.
So, to wrap it up: the first 11 days are a total write-off. Your two best bets are the glassy dawn patrol on August 19th and the clean, offshore conditions on the morning of August 20th. Mark your calendar.
