The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here with the lowdown on Kandui Left.
Water temp is a balmy 85°F, which is right on the money for this time of year – nothing unusual.
We’ve got a solid run of SSW swell comin’ in, mostly long-period groundswell with 16 to 19 seconds between waves. That’s proper energy, and on a reef like Kandui Left, it’s gonna produce some serious barrels. Problem is, for most of the first week, the wind is from the SE or SSE, blowin’ cross or cross-on, so there’s always a bit of bump or chop. The real standouts are the mornings when the wind drops light.
Best of the bunch? Saturday, 15th August – morning session. Glassy, dead calm, with a clean 6ft SSW swell. The combined energy is 1866 – that’s moderate to strong, but with the glassy surface, it’s gonna be smooth and lined up. Perfect for an intermediate or better.
Then, if you’re an expert, circle Thursday, 20th August. Morning has a cross-off breeze with a 10ft SSW swell, period 17 seconds, and the combined energy is a massive 5370 – that’s strong. The afternoon goes glassy with the same 10ft swell. This is big, powerful reef surfing – not for beginners. The sets are gonna be long and heavy.
For the first few days from the 8th, the wind is cross or cross-on, and the surf is just okay – not bad, but not clean. The 12th and 13th see a dip in size, but the wind stays light, so it’s still rideable.
Later in the second week, around the 18th and 19th, the swell jumps back to 8ft to 10ft, but the wind gets a bit more onshore or cross-chop, so it’s gonna be lumpy. Still, 10ft at 19 seconds on a reef is gonna have some serious grunt.
Crowds are a given – this spot is always packed, so bring your patience.
To sum it up: the 15th is the call for a fun, glassy session, and the 20th is the one for the big-wave crew. The rest is a mixed bag with the wind, but the swell stays alive.
Rusty out.
