Dunbar/Belhaven Bay Surf Guide

Dunbar/Belhaven Bay on the East Coast is a quite exposed beach and reef break that is usually a safe bet. Winter and spring are the favoured times of year to visit. Offshore winds blow from the west southwest. Waves just as likely from local windswells as from distant groundswells and the optimum swell angle is from the northeast. The beach breaks offer lefts and rights. Unlikely to be too crowded, even when the surf is up. Watch out for dangerous rips.

“I have surfed this beach for the last 24 years, and the best swell direction is North east, easterly, the waves break better when the swell has more of an easterly direction and the winds are off shore and light, Belhaven can be frustrating as the sand bars are constantly shifting coupled with some large tides the conditions can change rapidly, and larger swells can be hard work due to lots of white water.”
