Ocean Beach Jetty Wind Statistics, Winter averages since 2006

The graph shows how commonly and how strongly the wind blows from different directions through a typical northern hemisphere winter. The largest spokes point in the directions the wind most commonly blows from and the shade of blue suggests the strength, with the darkest shade of blue strongest. It is based on 8485 NWW3 forecasts of wind since since 2006, at 3hr intervals, for the closest NWW3 model node to Ocean Beach Jetty, located 35 km away (22 miles). There are insufficient recording stations world wide to use actual wind data. Without question some coastal places have very localized wind effects that would not be predicted by NWW3.

According to the model, the dominant wind at Ocean Beach Jetty blows from the WSW. If the rose plot shows a nearly round shape, it means there is no strong bias in wind direction at Ocean Beach Jetty. On the other hand, dominant spokes illustrate favoured directions, and the more the darkest shade of blue, the stronger the wind. Spokes point in the direction the wind blows from. Over an average northern hemisphere winter, the model suggests that winds are light enough for the sea to be glassy (light blue) about 34% of the time (31 days each northern hemisphere winter) and blows offshore 49% of the time (43 days in an average northern hemisphere winter). In a typical northern hemisphere winter wind stronger than >40kph (25mph) was predicted for only a single days at Ocean Beach Jetty

IMPORTANT: Beta version feature! Swell heights are open water values from NWW3. There is no attempt to model near-shore effects. Coastal wave heights will generally be less, especially if the break does not have unobstructed exposure to the open ocean.

FEATURE UPDATE: we now show red swell icons for 'open sea' swells that are travelling in an unfavourable direction for the surf break. In places, these swells may still wrap around coastlines and produce smaller waves at some breaks. They are also significant for windsurfers and other water users that tend to venture further off-shore.
