San Miguel Water Temperature and Wetsuit Guide

(Mexico – Baja Norte)

Today's San Miguel Sea Water Temperature is: 16.4 °C (62 °F)

Statistics for 14 Feb (1981–2005) – mean: 15.3 °C, range: 13.6 °C to 16.6 °C (mean 60 °F, range: 56 °F to 62 °F)

The water temperature (16 °C / 62 °F) at San Miguel is quite cool. If the sun does come out as forecast, it should feel warm enough to surf in a good sealed spring wetsuit. Some surfers would prefer to wear gloves and boots too. Effective windchill factor of (12 °C / 54 °F) will make the air and water feel about the same temperature.

San Miguel Water Temperature Graph

All of the graphs for the surf breaks presented on Surf-Forecast.com are on the same scale to enable comparison between locations around the world.

San Miguel sea temperatures peak in the range 19 to 23°C (66 to 73°F) on around the 3rd of September and are at their minimum on about the 30th of January, in the range 14 to 17°C (57 to 63°F). San Miguel sea temperatures are warmest at the start of September. Surfers should use a 2mm long sleeve shorty or a 3/2mm spring wetsuit if the wind is up. The minimum seasonal sea temperatures at San Miguel at the tail of January lend themselves to a 4/3mm wetsuit or a 3/2mm suit and 3mm neoprene boots.

Actual sea surface water temperatures close to shore at San Miguel can vary by several degrees compared with these open water averages. This is especially true after heavy rain, close to river mouths or after long periods of strong offshore winds. Offshore winds cause colder deep water to replace surface water that has been warmed by the sun. Air temperature, wind-chill and sunshine should also be considered before deciding on the kind of wetsuit needed to stay warm when surfing at San Miguel.
