Visitor reviews of Coogee surf break
(NOTE: Reviews may be edited by our content team for the purposes of ensuring accurate and relevant information)
“Coogee Beach is sheltered from swell from the SE and South by Wedding Cake Island which is located approx 1 km offshore. the beach picks up some swell from East. NE swell funnels straight in and waves on this swell direction can be had on an average right reef located close to shore at the Southern and of beach.
The beach itself has the wrong bottom contours and is generally just a closeout.
On rare occasions with 4 metre + NE swell on open ocean left point/reef at North end of beach gets wave big enough for takeoff to move out clear of rocks. Not a long wave... more of a novelty to surf.
On big North swells for those with a PWC, or brave enough to paddle 1km out to sea there is a right reef set up on the North side of Wedding Cake Island.
The Southy is a right reef near by that breaks on large South swells. Only access is by jumping off nearby cliffs, or a very long paddle from shore.”
