Carrownisky in Mayo and Achill Island is a fairly exposed beach break that has very reliable surf and works all around the year. The best wind direction is from the east and there is no shelter here from cross shore breezes. Does not handle onshore winds very well Waves just as likely from local windswells as from distant groundswells and the ideal swell direction is from the west northwest. The beach breaks offer lefts and rights. The quality of the surf isn't affected by the tide. When it's working here, it can get crowded. Watch out for dangerous rips.
